We didn’t evolve from any extant species of monkey, but if you went far back enough you could find a human ancestor that could be classified as a monkey. So, it’s not incorrect to say that we evolved from monkeys.
At least part of the problem that the OP cited is right here in…
vs.
The latter is a fine explanation of the theory of evolution. The former is the strawman used by a lot of creationists to produce a hundred screeds including this from a Google Ad at the bottom of the page. (On refresh it seems to have gone away. Thank God.) But a lot of people think that is what evolution is.
Yeah. We are certainly not solely the result of chance and it would have been better had I said that many people refuse to accept the idea that chance plays any part at all in our being here. Note to self: Remember that.
An analogy might be that the chance shuffling of the deck determines the characteristics of the bridge hands that are dealt and the rules of bridge (the environment) determines which ones are good bridge hands and which are not. A different environment, say a game using poker rules, would give those same hands a different worth in the game.
Two possibilities:
A) He’s pandering to a large segment of his political base.
B) The man is truly convinced this issue IS a matter of “belief” that is to be left to each to decide. You need not be stupid to reach a completely wrong conclusion on a subject that is outside your area of competence.
I doubt he’s given much thought to evolution. Most people don’t. And I doubt he knows much at all about ID. Still, the smart thing to say would be that we should let scientists decide what we teach in science classes. But considering what people most people in the US think, he’s probably smart politically to say what he did. The vast majority of Americans (about 2/3) want both evolution and creationism taught in schools. Even the majority of Democrats want this (or at least Kerry voters). Cite.
Pretty scary that over 1/3 of Americans want **only **creationism taught.
For one thing, if you can edit posts you can go back and correct a post that was wrong, ill-advised or whatever and thereby render a lot of answering posts irrelevant or made to appear silly.
What you say is on the record and the only thing to do is issure clarifications or corrections in another post.
Use the preview function to edit your posts before they are submitted and thereby are cast in concrete.
Editing is disabled for everybody. It’s to keep people honest with their posts and to preserve the record. It’s annoying sometimes but you have to just learn to preview before you submit.
“It’s supposed to scare the bejeezus into you.”
Well, it didn’t do that,
but it does scare the shit out of me. (the prez’s reference)
John Mace- Thanks for the editing advice.

Mr Mace, I am sorry it took this long to get you the cite you requested.
I have been very busy, but managed, finally, to properly respond.
And thanks for your patience.
“When asked directly by the Miami Herald whether he personally believes in evolution or not, he said “Yeah, but I don’t think it should actually be part of the curriculum, to be honest with you. And people have different points of view and they can be discussed at school, but it does not need to be in the curriculum.”
BTW, it’s rather strange that Bush would mention being Catholic, since the RCC is pretty much 100% on board with evolution, and it’s routinely taught in Catholic schools all throughout the country.
I haven’t been particularly busy for the last 10 years; just sitting here waiting for the cite to be posted. Thanks **bonitahi2 **, it’s going to feel good to get up out of this chair (if I can).
