Uh, someone may have said this, but I don’t speak French…only English and some German…but… might your socks not be French? I mean, it makes sense to me. You mentioned argyle socks, but who’s to say the French cannot manufacture argyle socks? I’d like to recount some of my own stories about my socks speaking to me, but offhand, I can’t remember a time when they did. Closest thing I can think of are the meaningful glances I’ve exchanged with my cat. ---

Most of my socks speak to me in !Xhosa. The rest speak to me in Proto-Indo European. My socks are wierd. ---
