Why do people bathe naked?

Nope. Lots of us hang out au natural at home.

When my Dad was a young man in the Navy, he observed Pakistani sailors wearing shorts while showering, presumably in deference to Islamic standards of modesty. However, this was in the semi-public environment of a group shower facility, and there is no reason to assume that these men would not shower nude in a private setting.

What am I supposed to do, wear a bathing suit?

Plus, as mentioned upthread, it’s not always PG. Massaging shower head anyone?

Because it you bathe in your clothes you have to dry them afterward to prevent mildew.

It’s just easier to bathe without them.

Everything mentioned above plus wearing wet clothes is extremely uncomfortable.

Haha naked!

Even Ferris Bueller and Regina Belmont (use your imagination) bathe naked.

They get on my nerves too.

I wear my birthday suit in the shower.

People in some places bathe wearing a sarong, and reach up under the sarong once immersed to clean themselves off. I think you only find that in places where people bath in rivers and the like, though.

Damn you, you beat me to it…I was going to say that…okay, then I shall say: codpiece

To give you a better show, Sugar.

Because we’re pervs.

If I may hijack just slightly, there might be a tidbit of slightly more serious discussion here. One can think of several activities that are most naturally done naked, yet due to societal squickishness about the human body (in particular, certain components thereof), we have this hang-up about keeping things covered.

So we have a variety of adjustments that we make…

. . . Some such activities are done highly in private (e.g., most bathing).
. . . Some such activities are done in gender-segregated facilities (e.g., changing clothes and showering in a locker room).

      • Some such activities are most logically done in public, or are sociable activities, such as sun-bathing or otherwise cavorting around on beaches or by swimming pools. These, we do with a minimum of threads, but keeping a little something on to cover “those” body parts.
. . . A smallish subset of people reject those norms, and for those, there are naturist resorts and clothing-optional beaches, etc.

The item marked * * * above is the one that seems most unreasonable to me. If it’s most logical to be fully naked (e.g., any kind of swimming or sun-bathing activity), but that’s also a very natural place to be with other people and be sociable, then the most natural resolution is for everybody to just be naked.

Here’s another little twist: Massage is best and most logically done naked, and I’ve heard that this is fairly standard in Europe. (Anyone east of the Pond can comment on that?) West of the Pond, “legitimate” commercial massage is absolutely done with the client covered under a sheet. But there are some schools of massage that work with everybody naked. I believe the school at Harbin Hot Springs, CA works this way, and is very widely known.

You can’t be serious. In the event that you are, in fact, serious: people bathe naked because that is the easiest way to clean themsleves. Kind of like if you need to urinate, you either go to the toilet or cath yourself (depending on your physical circumstances, natch) rather than have your bladder explode. It seems simple to most, but clearly you need a bit more “coaching” about this life thing.

I think the massage analogy is actually closer the swimsuit thing, though; there’s as little material there as possible, while still covering the naughty bits. For every massage I’ve ever had, I’ve been naked under the sheet, and the masseuse uncovers the parts she’s working on - including when massaging the gluteal muscles. I’ve always thought of it as more for warmth and comfort, since it seems cozier to be under a cover than naked in the breeze. The massage table is heated for the same reason.

When I’m camping and it’s freezy cold, no way am I going to totally strip and splash equally cold water all over myself. There’s no reason to stand there shivering violently when it can be done a piece at a time. Otherwise, bath time is naked time.

This is a joke, right?

etv78, are you able to bathe in a tub or a shower, or must you only sponnge bath? If you can only sponge bath, do you bathe in bed or your chair? Are you able to bathe yourself, or do you require assistance? Do you go swimming, and if so, do you require assistance when in the water?

In Spain massages are likely to involve towels; depending on what parts are being treated, you may be able to keep your underwear on if you feel more comfortable that way (for reasons ranging from “new to this massage thing” to “period” or “sensitive nipples”). Warm towels are a practical way to keep the customer warm in the cooler seasons: easier to adjust for their own personal taste than the heating, less likely to cause thermostat conflicts with other people and more focused on the bits which actually need heating than a space heater would be. It’s more a matter of physical comfort than of modesty.
