Why do people get offended when pack a pistol in their neighborhood?

I don’t know about the neighborhood where her friends live, but if you come to visit me, expect to walk several blocks. The likelyhood of you getting a parking space directly in front of my front door is very small indeed.

One thing I don’t understand - if the neighborhood is so dangerous, why don’t the friends have guns themselves? If they do, where do they keep theirs? If they don’t, how come they’re still alive?

Has the OP responded at all? Why are we still engaging her?

And I am a gun owner and I would be pretty appalled by her behavior.

Oh, no worries, I don’t. It’s just that people who insist on concealed carry permits in Des Moines for “safety” that I find pretty suspicious (especially when doing things like brandishing that are decidedly UNsafe). Sure, we have some vaguely sketchy neighborhoods where I wouldn’t, for example, leave an iPod or a laptop in my car for all to see, but come on.

Lots of people I know are gun owners, I have no issue with that, but when you have to have one with you at all times despite no apparent utility, and you act like your testicles have grown three sizes when you do…

I do give a pass to law enforcement as I know they are always potential targets (such as for criminals they’ve helped catch who have a chip on their shoulder) or may genuinely have need of it, but I’m also pretty familiar with the amount of training they do and I’ve never known a cop who didn’t handle their firearm safely. Certainly they were not dropping pistols on the dinner table in front of alarmed guests.

I just remembered a funny gun story.

The police department is in the building where I work. One day one of the detectives was talking to the secretary when an old lady, probably in her 80s, came in. She walked right up to him and said, “Officer, can I hold your gun? I just want to hold it. Here, you can just lay it right in my hand.” And held out her hand just waiting for him to hand over his gun.

The secretary was about ready to wet her pants trying not to laugh and he quite sensibly told the old lady no way he was handing over his weapon (because you never know who’s going to go on a shooting rampage) and she got all mad at him because she just wanted to hold it for a minute. He got the hell out of there as fast as he could, and then had to put up with me and the secretary greeting him with “Officer, can I hold your gun?” (with a suggestive leer) for about a week until he politely asked us to knock it off.

Get the fuck out! Really??
I find nothing wrong with it, but that surprises me (obviously).

I own a 9 mm pump action Super Soaker.

It’s invaluable to be prepared in case a wet t-shirt contest breaks out.

I too was surprised our **Anaamika **is a gun owner! But then I flash back to the jackwagon stranger who insisted she give him her family’s address so he could write and tell them she’s living w/ a guy; I’m not shocked she may feel the need for a little extra precaution.

Yeah, she had a recent thread asking for information on how to locate a good shooting range, courses and so forth. She’s a poster case for “responsible gun owner”.

Clearly diamonds02 are not forever, in this thread.

You say this, but I once saw her drop a rifle on the table at tea time with grandma. This is a true story.

She is also reported to have butt-stroked her boyfriend.

No big deal, she has antimassacres on all the chairs. (And Kevlar is a bitch to crochet).

I’m not sure what an antimassacre is and my grandma’s dead so maybe I dropped it at someone else’s grandma’s table. But I am indeed a gun owner - we now own 3 .22s of various brands. My own gun is a bolt action Savage Arms Mark II and I crush on it heavily; it’s a lovely gun.

I don’t use it for personal protection (it’s a .22, I mean I could point it at them, but if I had to shoot it it probably would just make them mad). I do go to the range and shoot cans and such out in the deep, deep woods. And I always clean up my brass.

I’ve always said I’m kind of an Indian-from-India redneck - I love monster truck rallies, potbellied pig racing, and what do you call it when you smash all the cars and trucks together in the pit? I love that too.

So yes, I am a gun owner, and plan to have more guns in the future.

It’s a rather clever word substitution. IMO, for antimacassar

I meant to say thank you.

My first piece of advice is that if the o.p. must carrry a weapon, that she does a full unload outside her friends front door, puts it into her bag, mag off and THEN rings the bell.

Personally I’d be crapping myself all of the time she was around because of the high liklihood of a negligent discharge.

I think that if she was in a situation that actually did require a weapon she’d either shoot herself accidently or someone else accidently.
I think the putative assailents would probably be safe as houses.

That said there are many people who THINK that they know their way around guns and usually have a collection, will quote you muzzle velocities and other anorak, and who fire standing still at static targets down a range, and are almost as dangerous .

They tend to be careless around weapons and have an exaggerated idea of their profficiency .
They seem to be prone to leaving weapons lieing around, playing with them, pointing them at people accidently and not realising that they’re doing it, and holding them with their fingers on the trigger though they’re not intending to fire.

They also fail to do full unloads properly often leaving one up the spout.assume weapons are unloaded without checking and passing weapons to untrained people, sometimes including children.
We call these people CWGs, clowns with guns.

And no, blatting off a few on a Saturday afternoon at your local club doesn’t make you an expert, or even profficient with a weapon, and never will do.

"Enthusiasts"scare the shit out of me.

To the OP: Don’t take it out! Why advertise that you’re carrying?

I live in Calif and sometimes carry. This is not legal and I know I take a big risk. I never let anyone know if/when I carry. When I visit another’s house, they are completely unaware that I’m carrying. I do have a CCW, BTW, but not for the People’s Republic of California.

If you carry, please please PLEASE be extremely well trained in not only handling your weapon but also in handling many tactical situations.

As a military vet who has a calm demeanor, avoids altercations and doesn’t get mad when another driver cuts me off, for example, and who has gotten some excellent training (go to Front Sight!) and is an expert shot,I trust myself to carry but I do NOT trust most others in their ability to handle this huge responsibility. Yes, I fully admit this is a double standard. So be it.

Be advised, typical CCW training is pathetically poor.

I would be concerned about such a person having a gun near me.

Ok, going by the responses in this thread I should keep my baby, Buffy the Bulletholder, out of sight. I guess they don’t call it PACKING heat for no reason.

I do find it interesting that people in this thread, including gun owners, haven’t been in situations when someone took out their gun for whatever reason. I come from a family and have even a couple of friends do a gun “show and tell” whenever we get a new gun or if we haven’t seen each other in a while. We tell stories about what we shot, who they pulled the gun out on, legal issues, etc. Now, I haven’t done anything dumb, again my primary use is for protection.

Remember I’m an OCD neurotic, there’s no way in hell I’ll use something as dangerous as a gun without training. As for me having a license, shouldn’t this be something assumed? Whenever some makes a car related post, do people ask if the OP has a drivers license?
