Why do people laugh during Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon?

If you need it to be explained to you, then obviously the “you don’t understand the culture” crap isn’t crap. What the hell. Deal with it or don’t like the movie, but don’t pretend it’s the movie’s problem.

The truth is some things that one culture takes seriously can be laughed at by another. I myself am not a big fan of kung-fu movies with all the wires and the jumping. I just can’t get it past my mind how silly it all looks. But I do find the stunts to be well done but I just don’t consider them visually pleasing. The last wire fu movie I saw was Black Mast with Jet Li. I think it was Black Mask. I didn’t like it but some of my friends loved it.

I’ll admit that I am culturally biased. The idea of a man in blue tights who can fly, is near invulnerable, and who’s main weakness is a “rock” from his home is pretty damn silly. But I can watch a Superman movie or cartoon without thinking how silly it is and laughing.

On the other hand I love old Japanese samurai movies starring Toshiro Mifune. I take them seriously but sometimes even they make me laugh. Anyone ever see Sanjuro? At the end of the movie Sanjuro (Mifune) strikes down his oppoenent in a duel when this ridiculous amount of blood sprays everywhere. I laughed out loud. I also laughed in RAN when the blood flowed as from a river, in Yojimbo when the blood flowed as from a faucet, and in Princess Mononoke when his arrow took off heads and arms. But all of those movies I listed I really enjoyed and took the effort to buy on DVD.

So in short get a grip. It’s ok to laugh even if you think it isn’t appropriate. People laugh at the absurd and the absurd can vary from person to person.
