Why do pilots say "niner"?

If you want frost bitten ears, use CB lingo when talking to ‘center’ or ‘approach control’.

Flying through Indianapolis center’s air space one night, it was very busy and it was one of those times you did not even acknowledge centers transmissions unless requested to for a read back. What was so cool about this was the guy was talking in a manner and at a cadence that was very similar to Georgian Chant that you will hear in a church sometimes. It was very fast and incredibly easy to understand. When I passed into another sector and frequency, I asked a supervisor to tell that controller what a great job he was doing and that I was very impressed with how well and clearly I understood everything. The supervisor said he would and all so noted that they got a lot of pilot reports about how well his style was liked.

There is/was a female controller in Tulsa that has the type voice that is easy to hear and understand. These folks are worth their weight in gold on dark and scary nights when the gremlins are in a feeding frenzy…
