Why Do Some Foods Taste Better Hot/Cold?

I don’t know of a single asian culture that prefers to drink tepid water. For the most part, asians prefer their water to be boiled, a similar adaptation against bacteria.

Every Taiwanese family I’ve ever visited has served lukewarm water. Same with the small sample of Korean folks I know. Some Chinese, as well.

Some have dispensers (similar to water coolers,) that dispense warmed (but not still steaming) water.

I’m told that the rationale is that cold water is too much of a shock to warm internal organs, and can make you vulnerable to illness.

Most of these Asian folks I’ve associated with in the last few years are adherents of traditional Chinese medicine, so that may skew things a bit – but it’s called “traditional” for a reason, right?

I’m not Asian, but I like room-temp water. I buy bottled water by the case, and keep it in the den (where we have a pantry closet). I put some bottles in the fridge for my husband and kids, but I prefer to just grab a bottle from the case and drink it. I don’t like icy-cold water.
