I don’t know about now, but back in the day, it was done specifically (in at least some cases) so if you tried to tape the song, you’d have the DJ yammering over the first and last 15 seconds.
Some were quite “good” at talking right up exactly to the point the singing started. Especially FM stations at 99 on the dial, they could work a station plug out of a certain Toto song.
Johnny Cougar’s I need a Lover must have been hog heaven for them. They could get all the announcements for the day in during that one intro.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard an edited version of a song on any of the Rock/Metal stations. Maybe on Turbo (I don’t listen to that as much), but definitely not on Liquid Metal or Octane.
There are some stations that are obviously censored like 90s on 9 and Pop2k, but I attribute that to SiriusXM trying to have some stations the whole family can listen to that aren’t boring as all getout. Even though they don’t HAVE to censor the songs, it behooves them to have at least a few pop stations where the whole family can listen in.
This is inescapable and turns up on internet-only radio shows too, which often have multiple chattering hosts at once. I too find this format annoying but as much as I’d like to believe it’s completely useless, I have to admit there seems to be a large segment of the audience that truly prefers it. The hosts often talk about all the listener feedback that “loves the banter” between the hosts, asks for updates on their personal lives, or even mails them freakin’ cookies.
That’s not necessarily why they do it. I hate posting Youtube crap, but I actually listen to his podcast, which I hate posting, too, but in essence, talking over the song is specific to certain formats.
Computerized FM stations started rolling out in the 1970s. Saved money. One “dj” could serve a dozen cities. (And work amazingly long shifts seven days a week*.) Once the lead-n to a song was figured out, it’d be put into the computer and the timings co-ordinated with the taped dj intro. No human skill needed.
Yeah, let’s recreate the sound of a computerized station.
- Anybody remember Bruce Funkhauser? Not a made up name, I’m sure.
That guy is is a poster child for talking too much instead of getting to the point!
When we got our new Terrain in '13 we got the freebie to Sirius radio and have subscribed to it since. We traded it in on an '18 Acadia last summer and we got some kind of a credit. I very much like it and I personally think Cousin Brucie is rather entertaining for a personality who’s well past 80. All IMHO of course.
As a podcast, he’s actually not too bad. What I don’t understand is why people actually sit there and watch the video. Yeah, he talks too much. Interesting that the same thing as audio-only in the car and watching him in video are such different experiences.
they have a clock that lets them now how many seconds they can talk in the intro of the song. The clock hits 0 when the vocals start so they stop talking then.
