WOW… we’re kind of out of words here… but thanks so much to everyone who replied with answers, we’re really enlightened now… oooOooo… insane! What a lot of learning.
Thanks SO much, this more than satisfies our curiosity… and this is a great place to be :D!
In my neighboorhood if you don’t mow the lawn and maintain it, it will cost you $100 fine a day. You are given a warning and have 3 days to mow it but if you don’t…look out!
It should be noted that the deadliest animals found anywhere in Dorset are Yeovil Town FC fans on the cider, and they are equally likely to be found in long OR short grass.
(spent my formative years in Sherborne)
Try that in the States (especially down here in Florida) and something large enough to eat you will eventually appear in your garden…
Oh, just FYI I find that rather than sniffing that petrol stuff, my cordless electric does just great and I don’t need hearing protection to avoid deafness.
Why do we have lawns at all? What a waste of expensive real estate to set one’s house halfway back on a lot and fill hundreds of square feet with high maintenance turf.
Ruby’s right about lawns being a new thing. Old timers put their houses by the road and left all the room out back for gardens, sheds, etc. (At least they did that here in old New England villages.)
Recently saw a commercial printer’s building with tomato plants on the “front lawn.” What a thrifty Yankee idea.
Well, yes. Apart from the recent hot spell, (which of course, we aren’t allowed to mention lest we offend those who REALLY know what hot weather is) this is England, and blue tits are quite common. We also do an excellent line in great tits.
Sorry kspharm, was that not what you were hoping for?
And hey dutchboy208…I think that was a Yeovil maniac on the rhino! How long ago were you in Sherborne?
