Because bill basically said so “Bill Clinton had campaigned promising “two for the price of one,””

So what would be different other then it being president Hillary, instead of president Bill. The ran the white house together, so we’ve already see what a Clinton white house would look like.

> A balanced budget amendment is bad economic policy. In times of recession or depression, cutting taxes and increased spending is appropriate, even if it increases the deficit. Without that in the toolbox, the free market will go into a death spiral that could take decades to come out of.

There are ways to handle that, ie rainy day funds etc, but then again given that congress is like a 5 year old with a $20 in a candy store, they wouldn’t be able to save anyway.

Again, email server was a very poor decision on her part. If you think it rises to the level of disqualifying her from being POTUS, fair enough, she doesn’t deserve your vote.

But you’re still avoiding the other important part of the question. Knowing what you know about Trump and his disqualifying attributes, why did you vote for him? Why not stay home? Or is there nothing in sum total about Trump that adds up to the email issue for HRC? Not the pathological lying, not the bigotry, not the narcissism, not the lechery and infidelity, not the cozying up to despots, not the cheating workers out of pay, not the multiple failures of various businesses, not the intellectual shortcomings. Not any and all these things make him a worse option in your mind?

Are you okay with a president that has already told you, by last count, 3000 lies? How do you tell when he’s being truthful and when he’s lying? I’d really like to know the answer to that.

That’s old thinking. Now it means “let’s do something about global warming / net neutrality / caring for local immigrant community.” If there’s one thing good that’s come of the last year IMO it’s the revitalization of the left on these issues on the state/local level.

You know, forget “worse option”. Given his fundamental flaws and shortcomings, why do you feel that he deserves your vote?; separate and apart from whether or not you feel HRC was an acceptable alternative (I get that you believe she was not).

Bolding mine. This is one of the reasons why I started this thread. My OP was probably less than clear, and the thread has bounced around a lot. That’s fine with me.

But Trump has been dirty for decades. It’s common knowledge. He’s a slime ball. How could anyone vote for him?

They want things back the way they used to be, is the most charitable reason I can think of. What that might be varies from person to person, but Trump promised a lot.

It was all hooey, of course. He’s not just a slime ball, he’s at the low end of every bell curve describing human behaviour known. There is no straight line of reasoning from any legitimate grievance to a vote for Trump. There is a twisty-turny Möbius strip of a line passing through Cloud Cuckoo Land of reasoning between a legitimate grievance and a vote for Trump.

NB: “America isn’t white enough and there are too many people darker than a paper bag and practicing the wrong kind of religion” is not a legitimate grievance.

Trump is a despicable dumpster fire of a person, but I am related to people who voted for him and still support him. I don’t really interact much with them, but I’ve been to their houses and I see them on Facebook. Painting with a broad brush, here are some of the categories of Trump supporters:

1. Garbage In/Garbage Out: This accounts for our recent posters; people who are smart enough to apply logic to an argument, and who are wise enough to know how to read and listen to the news. But, their information sources are for shit. That’s why they believe things like immigrants are criminals, that pre-ACA healthcare worked fine, that Obama was bad for the economy, or any other number of objectively wrong things. It’s not that they can’t handle sophisticated nuance, it’s just that they aren’t exposed to it, and instead told incorrect things that lead them to believe that Democrats are traitors, or weak or ineffectual.

You can try to correct these people (in theory, they can be reasoned with), but your patient corrections will get subsumed by the waves of bad data they regularly intake. My dad (who was a regular fan of Glenn Beck’s radio program) probably qualifies.

1. Republican by tradition: My Uncle votes Republican. Trump was the Republican, so he voted for him. Why? Because my Uncle was raised by a Republican father, so he learned at a young age that “Republicans are good for business, and Democrats favor poor people”. And since he owns his own business, he’s a Republican. It’s simple, really: Your political party is part of your identity, and once identified it’s simply who you are. My Uncle can no more imagine becoming a woman than becoming a Democrat.

Similarly, my cousin’s step-father once got in a Facebook spat with me because I made disparaging remarks about the Republican administration…of Herbet Hoover! For real; I was disparaging the team. He couldn’t cotton to that (his utter ignorance of the dates of WWI and the Depression notwithstanding)

1. Reasons. My Aunt hates Hillary with the fire of a thousand suns. Why? “She’s a crook”. Why? “I don’t want to talk about it!” My cousin’s wife, when I lamented Trump winning, said on Facebook “Well with Hillary you’d have to deal with her emails!” What about them? They are bad! Bad emails! (It should be noted that my cousin’s wife is functionally illiterate - seriously, as a mother of 4 in her 30s, she doesn’t know how to use any punctuation. I doubt my Aunt could manage to read a book. She’s very sweet, but also quite dumb)

Lots of people “know” things that they don’t really know. They just think it, because it’s an impression they get. Man, Colbert was genius with that whole “truthiness” thing. Usually, I find that these are the people who only think something because a smart person told them. Cousins who spend a lot of time in church are included.

1. Bigotry. One of my cousins thinks that Black people wouldn’t get shot if they stopped robbing places. It’s not that he thinks that Black people are all criminals. But, seriously, they should really stop robbing stores if they don’t want to be shot. When his wife posted some beautiful and opulent picture from Dubai that she saw online, he was beside himself: “Babe, it says United ARAB emirates. Arab!”

He doesn’t believe minorities have anything to complain about, but he hates that he goes to places where he feels “like a minority in my own country”. When he was 18, he had to look on his driver’s license to spell his middle name on an application.

Yes, people really are that dumb. Trump made those people feel important.
…………….
So, why support Trump.

Well, a lot of ignorance. Note that ignorance is not a function of whether you make a lot of money, whether you are nice, or even whether you are happy. But it does reflect a lack of understanding - either because the person lacks the capacity for critical thought or are being misled by biased sources that profit off of fear and confusion. I daresay that a person with access to, and an understanding of, reputable and comprehensive information would not, could not, be a Trump supporter.

Niece by way of marriage, or the offspring of a sibling?

If the offspring of any of MY siblings were to post something like that on FB, I’d give serious consideration to highlighting it in a forward to said sibling, with the comment, _“I hope you’re proud of yourself.”_

For me, the best thing about the Trump administration is the online humor, memes, snark, etc. by the anti-Trump resistance. Libs, lefties and Democrats are just funnier people. Conservative “humor” is almost without exception…lame. They are just not funny people.

Not that there is anything funny about what the screeching orange shitstain is hoping to do to America.

I truly enjoy seeing Trump skewered daily, wish that all translated into the masses actually toppling that sorry sack of shit. Afraid it might not happen.

They’ve decided that they simply cannot vote for a Democrat, especially after that party unconstitutionally put a foreign born non-American citizen Muslim (that’s what they believe) into the White House. So, what do they do? They twist themselves into pretzels and/or flat out lie to themselves and others about the other major party’s candidate. In this case, that candidate was Trump. Look at postpic’s nonsense in this thread. He’s doing both: “pretzeling” and lying to explain why Trump is so much better than an actually competent person in government.
