I don’t. The only kind of meat I find morally objectionable to consume is human. I wouldn’t voluntarily eat dogmeat myself, but I wouldn’t flip out if someone told me after-the-fact that I’d just eaten a dogsteak (as long as it was raised and butchered humanely, not a kidnapped family pet). Unless it was a Welsh Corgi, then I’d be mad. 😉

**Monty** beat me to it, but yeah: dogs are not consumed for nutrition nor survival, it’s _entirely_ a patent-medicine sort of scam taking advantage of people’s sexual insecurities, and cruelty toward the dogs is the specific _point_ of the exercise – it only sells because the cruelty is what attracts people to the myth.

So, to sum up: there’s no redeeming value to eating dogs, and much that is hideously wrong with it, and it has no equivalency to Western food practices because its not about _food_.

I think we are talking about two different things here. On the one hand we have Monty and others talking about the specific establishment that exists in certain country(ies) that is inhumane and terrible to dogs, and makes weird health claims about why you should eat it, etc. I think pretty much everyone here on The Dope is going to be against that.

Then you have people like me who are saying as long as the dog is killed humanely and wasn’t a stray or someone’s beloved pet, then how is it any different than eating pig or cow or chicken, so yeah I’m not against it.

So Monty, et al, what if the dogs were raised like any other foodstuff, regulated, slaughtered “humanely”, etc. Are you opposed to it even then, and if so, why?

But they’re not. What do you not get about that? As **Sailboat** mentioned,

Further information on the cruelty aspect: the idea is that beating and burning the live dog will cause adrenaline to infuse the muscle tissue, thus making it more effective for “stamina.”

I saw on the news here today that some Russians were apprehended by China’s border police for smuggling bear paws. How much do you want to bet that the butchering of those bears (for “medicinal purposes,” no doubt) was done humanely, that it was regulated? The whole point of dispatching the bear was to get its paws.

I’m not having any luck looking this up now, but I do recall hearing or reading that one of the earliest, if not the earliest, Antarctic expeditions had to consume their dogs for survival. I’m not against that, although I’ve been vegetarian for over a decade. Survival is one thing, woo woo is another.

If the South Korean government were to regulate dogmeat (something that was actually suggested by a previous administration there), the shops would simply ignore the regulation because their customers would not frequent places that are cruelty-free.

Well, none of that was in the OP, so I answered strictly from a survival aspect. I would never knowingly order dog in a restaurant.

</div>

Ok but as many vegetarians and vegans have proved, eating ANY meat is never done for survival aspects.

So stop ignoring my question and answer me! If dogs were raised as any other livestock for food, would you eat them? Forget what’s happening NOW in practice. Obviously we are all opposed to that here. No one here is saying “yes eating dogs is fine, even if they are abused and eaten for superstitious health reasons.” You’re arguing against something that no one here is arguing for.

I don’t like the thought of eating any carnivore although cat meat is delicious. I tasted coyote and it was awful. Monkeys are supposed to be one of the finest meats. Dogs are just too lovable to eat.

We’re not allowed to discuss the subject hypothetically?

I guess I have to qualify my post then: if we assume that for some bizarre reason humans can only ever consume dogmeat under the conditions currently operating in Korea or similar, then I’m against it.

Worth noting that eating puppies also shows up in Roman folk medicine, and at least until recently was not limited to Asia.

A local taxidermist used to prepare wild meat for a bar I frequented. I have had both mountain lion and bobcat. The bob cat was very good and the mountain lion was probably the tastiest meat I have ever eaten bar none.

In Scott’s pioneer Antarctic expedition dogs were used for hauling sleds. The weakest had to be slaughtered to provide food for the remainder. This put Scott off the idea and his remaining expeditions were pony and man driven. IIRC dogs were still used for short trips. Amundsen was entirely dog driven on his successful Polar bid.

I thought it was a dog meat question, not about they were to be tortured and abused to get the right taste. Oh wait it was only about dog as a meat, and not some torture abusive thing.
