Snuffy jumped the shark the second Barney Google left.
What are you trying to say?
Texas National Guard units have been in the thick of things lately, whether it be Iraq, Afghanistan, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Rita or Kosovo.
What planet are you on? Surely not the one I am living on, because I see a hell of a lot of criticism of the war and the current administration and nothing being “done about” said criticism.
Lord, forgive me for collaborating with the Zombie Thread, but…
Regime schmegime. It’s the newspaper and syndicate editors and publishers who would not have even the rough approximation of the gonads to run a war satire strip these days.
Just imagine the letters:
"There is NOTHING funny about war! Cancel my suscription! "
“You are poking fun at our troops! Cancel my suscription!”
“You are ridiculing our cause! Cancel my suscription!”
“You are glorifying the war! Cancel my suscription!”
“You are sugarcoating! Cancel my suscription!”
“You are sensationalizing! Cancel my suscription!”
“Comic strips are for children, this is not suitable! Cancel my suscription!”
“You dumbed down the war to make it suitable for children! Cancel my suscription!”
“You did not mention why they’re against us! Cancel my suscription!”
“Why are you repeating their argument to be against us! Cancel my suscription!”
“Where are the black soldiers?”
“Where are the women soldiers?”
Et Cetera.
One mailbag of these and any member in good standing of the Corporate Media will punt.
Is Mort Walker still alive? I wonder if he still writes and draws the strip. (though I doubt it)
I suppose it’s vaguely possible that what with the guard duty and all that they do, they are actually deployed all the time, just in some relatively stable corner of the world. I don’t suppose any of the Army units deployed in Korea would be that laid back about things, would they?
Only if there is a local town called Hadleyburg, which is where Camp Swampy is located.
Hasn’t “Doonsbury” done some scenarios about Iraq? One of the characters lost his leg, as I recall.
