Craig Ferguson is currently the funniest host in late-night television, by a mile. He’s also the most original. Most of the other hosts tell jokes and do shtick. Ferguson can go off-script and just be funny, for extended periods of time. He’s also the best interviewer in late-night, because he doesn’t just chat small talk or read from prepared questions the PR flacks put together, but he actually tries to get guests to come out of their shells and contribute something original to the show or reveal something about themselves they didn’t intend to. Craig Ferguson is also the most talented of the bunch. He can really act, he can sing well, play the drums (he spent years in a punk band as a drummer in Scotland), he’s a good puppeteer, a great stand-up comedian, he’s written a well-reviewed novel and an excellent autobiography, and he wrote the screenplay for “Saving Grace”, which was nominated for a many awards and won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival. ---

Don’t forget about how smart he is (not well-educated; just smart, and I suspect well-read). He downplays it, but he can hang with anyone he has on the show, and that brings up another point - the guests he gets. He has philosophers, professors, pretty much anyone who interests him on the show. He had a female actress guest whose name escapes me whose father-in-law is a major philosopher kind of guy, so a few weeks later, he had the father-in-law on the show. ---
