Why does it seem like there are fewer homeless in New York City than in other comparable cities?

The housing situation may be changing in NYC due to the number of migrants:

For months, Mayor Eric Adams has been issuing warnings that the New York City shelter system simply cannot handle the deluge of over 90,000 people it has received in the last year or so. “We have no more room in the city,” he cautioned at a recent press conference.

NYC is working on building shelters, but it sounds like they have problems:

Several described the situation at this new site so dire, they would rather sleep under a nearby highway overpass. Others have no choice but to join a homeless camp of nearly 20 men.

It’ll be interesting to see how they handle it. I think NYC has a lot of financial incentive to provide housing. The safer the city feels, the more people are willing to venture out and contribute to the economy. If it feels sketchy walking around after dark, people will stay at home.
