Why does Nevada have different rules for churches than casinos etc?

Is that not the case?

Former Nevadan here.

Nevada state doesn’t have a sales tax. It also doesn’t have an income tax. And it’s residential property taxes are relatively low. But Clark County, home to the vast majority of Nevada’s casino industry does have an 8.375 % sales tax.

Despite that quibble, your underlying point is valid: The various layers of government rely upon the tourist trade for a lot of its revenue. As well, the civil economy relies upon the tourist trade for a lot of its revenue and as the reason for a lot of its employment.

If the tourists stay away or are kept away by government fiat then Nevada in general and Las Vegas in particular go into economic freefall.

Nevada does have a state sales tax. It is 4.6%.

Hmm. I had thought so from now-ancient memory but before I posted the above I checked an online sales tax calculator site which said the state rate was zero. In fact the first version of my post was written before I’d checked and asserts NV did have a state sales tax. I made a hasty edit to change that after I hit the erroneous site.

In response to your post I checked a couple of other online sites. And got exactly what you report. Oops.

Goes to show us that GIGO is alive and well even on the supposedly reliable parts of the internet. One site/cite is nice; two sites/cites are much better safer.

Thanks for the correction.

Why couldn’t you just say that earlier rather than just :face_with_raised_eyebrow:?

I was offering a chance for self-correction. I’ll take note of your preference, tho, should I encounter an error in one of your posts and promise to respond according to your wishes.
