Something I’ve seen and heard from the right is that “globalism” and “global elites” are somehow evil or something of that nature. Now, to me, all of this life thing should be about the success and dignity of the human species (or “the human project” as I once heard it referred to on a current affairs show), and to me that depends on globalism, diversity, acceptance etc etc, otherwise we’re just going to kill each other at some point.

Why do they hate this so much? Is it basically because they’re uneducated, selfish, and short-sighted? Is it simply because they were brought up as xenophobic bigots? I’m genuinely curious.

Yes.

Yes.

The whole “America First” dogma is essentially isolationist. “We’re the best country in the world, and we’re gonna stay that way, and fuck the rest of you”. It’s the international version of the domestic “I’ve got mine, and sucks to be you if you don’t. (And I also have guns to make sure it stays that way.)”

I’d be happy to be educated if there’s more subtlety to it than that, but I don’t think there is.

Absolutely. The dogma of selfishness and maximum ignorance, sometimes seen in kindergarten, but not in international politics.

The promise (lie), and desire (that is not organic), is a fortress, island, America with full employment for all (in sweatshops), where every want is satisfied (despite certain wants not being satisfied easily if at all, E.G. no more cheap covfefe), with no Jews (as Odesio points out) or their melaninated shock troops.

Basically, it’s what everyone has said. They [think “globalists” are Jews](https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/03/the-origins-of-the-globalist-slur/555479/), they are xenophobes who hate everyone outside the borders, and they consider the world a zero-sum place where trade and alliances are a scams and only tribute is profitable.

IMHO, it’s because they think 1) globalism would dilute the particular culture or attributes of a nation and 2) they think there is a double standard where the West must accept immigrants but non-Western nations aren’t required to reciprocate. Additionally, they often think globalism means submitting to the UN or some sort of global body that would dictate what America can do, taking away American autonomy or something.

Globalism also means being exposed to other ways of thinking, for example countries that have sensible guns laws and functional health care systems. American exceptionalism takes great offense to this.

Yeah, the above is a factor.

But the destruction of manufacturing jobs by companies who moved factories overseas for cheap labor and food companies who import food from overseas for cheap labor and all the other aspects of a global economy are also real factors. They can be seen by every person living in a Rust Belt city and every person living in a small town whose one employer closed its doors. And they can be seen through all the opiate deaths that resulted, fueled by foreign pharma firms pushing pills.

The global economy has made the world fantastically rich. A billion or more people have moved into the middle class and another billion or more moved out of dire poverty. The U.S. has benefited hugely over the last few decades. But that doesn’t help individuals who were undercut by the future. Trump was put back into office by a form of populism that had millions looking for a leader to say America First and put that into action.

Not that it helped them one bit in the end. But if you believed Trump then, you’ll believe him now when he says that it’s all somebody else’s fault, primarily immigrants taking your jobs and getting welfare and not paying taxes and illegally voting for Democrats and eating cats and dogs and all that shit. When has scapegoating ever not worked?

Who, somehow, can not see that those manufacturing jobs and their required factories are never coming back if only because multi-national companies can not pay American labor costs and still make products that Americans could afford at the demanded profit margin.
(In no small part because paying the investor class is far, far, more important than paying the producing and consuming class.)

I think it’s the same kind of thing that caused many Brits to vote for Brexit – they don’t want bureaucrats from far away and who speak different languages, that they never got to vote for, to tell them what they have to do. Because when someone talks about globalism as a good thing, the next thing to happen is world government (in their view). It’s bad enough when Washington dictates, at least it is possible to have some influence there, and recent successes in that area just get those folks to want to be more sure than ever that power doesn’t get vested even farther away.

And yeah, Jews and foreigners and all that other stuff. It’s pretty much an ugly stew of Us v Them.

Why does the far right/maga (is there really a difference, seriously?) see globalism as a bad thing? I think the answer is the simply cannot accept other as equals. The whole idea of people different from them are actually people is anathema.

Agree with the gist so far.

There’s a LOT of belief that that investor class is mostly not Real Americans. Yes, Jews, but also foreigners. Multinational corporations answer to multinational interests, not good old home town interests.

If the OP (or any of us in this thread) have not seen this other thread started yesterday, you should read it. It’s a very close parallel to this one. That one is more political, this one is slightly more economic.

Well, in the run-up to WW1 there was. People were mad that Wilson and Great Britain suckered us into that stupid war. UK lying propaganda was exposed. America lost 116000+ soldiers unnecessarily, plus double that in wounded.

Not to mention 33Billion in costs, which was about half the GNP.

Americans said- never again will Britain con us into yet another European war of theirs. Of course later on we found out the Nazis were actually worse that was publicized.

Today that is still there, but a minor issue. Some Liberals still dont want us involved in any foreign wars.

But yeah, the big main issue today is zenophobia.

However, as EM says here- is not a small or unrealistic issue-

Nitpick: xenophobia, from xenos (foreign).

Although Zeno’s paradoxes do make many people hate him.
