Do you believe that any Congressman was ignorant as to the nature of the mandate?
Personally, I’m kind of tired of our lawmakers being more interested in how to label something than they are interested in what the thing actually is.

I’m going to bookmark this post as an extreme example of one Doper being completely incapable of having the slightest clue what point the message he replied to was making.
Your mission, Shodan, should you choose to accept it. is to salvage an impression by posting a paragraph demonstrating that, on reread, you grasp the point I was making. Nevermind whether you agree with it, just convince us you understand the post.
It wasn’t a retcon - it was the whole basis for his authority to create Obamacare. Otherwise it would have been un-Constitutional. Obama used to teach Constitutional law - he knew all along he was lying.
People who study the Constitution sometimes come to different interpretations. Hard for a conservative to grasp, but its true.
It was certainly easier to lie than tell the truth, and you are probably correct that Obamacare would not have passed if Obama had not lied about it. But that is the problem - Obama did lie, to get his health care bill passed, and that poisoned the well for anyone except Obama-ites.
LOL! So had he did what you think he should have done and sold it as a tax, we would not have gotten 4 years of obstruction? He would have been able to get more than 0 House GOP votes? That’s laughable and ridiculous, even for you. These people hated Obama from day 1, they even met to talk about obstructionism before he was sworn in. There was nothing Obama could have done to get their support and I could the ACA as one of the few but great examples where he didn’t give a damn how many GOP votes he got, he was passing that. And it happened and America is better off for it
Right, but that is what I mean - you don’t care that Obama lied, and support the bill anyway. And yet object when you think the GOP lied.
sigh Let’s try this again Shodan. I know you can read this, you’ve been responding to other stuff I’ve written. Please drop whatever pretense you have to show off your conservative virtues for your fellow Republicans on this board or whatever it is you’re doing. Here is the god’s honest truth: I believe Obama did not think it was a tax. I believe he sold it as a non-tax because, if push comes to shove, he believed that the SCOTUS would not declare it a tax.
No more misinterpreting what I meant, ok? If I could ask the mods to suspend the rules for a second, I am fine if Shodan, in this case, calls me a liar. Because that’s what I would have to be. I have full faith and confidence in Obama’s integrity that I simply do not think he felt, deep down in his mind, that it was a tax. I take him at his word that he felt it wasn’t. So that doesn’t make him a liar, it makes him mistaken about the interpretation. That’s why I don’t really give a flying fuck that people said he lied. As far as I’m concerned, he made a mistake. Big deal, life goes on. I’m happy with the result
That is incorrect, obviously. Obama denied that he was imposing new taxes, and both YogSosoth and I agree that he lied in order to get the bill passed.
Ahem, read above. Obama did not lie.
