Saskatchewan’s economy is hot on the tail of Alberta’s. Housing prices have nearly doubled over the past couple years. Skilled labour is in very, very short supply, and retail establishments have ‘help wanted’ signs out more often than signs advertising their weekly sale. If you come to Saskatoon today ready and willing to work, I promise you can have a job starting no later than Monday.
Canada does not want lower class Americans as citizens.

While Canada does have better social services for lower-income people in some respects, such as tax-funded medical care, these are not generally available to illegal immigrants as you must be registered in the system to make use of them (e.g. I must show my Ontario Health Card, and usually have it validated, to get medical services). I believe that one of the issues in the US is that illegal immigrants CAN make use of many such services without documentation.
For immigrants from the US, I agree with previous posters that there are no significant advantages which would offset the disadvantage of illegal status.
Well, just like in Canada, here in the US if you show up at the emergency room you’ll get treatment even if you don’t have ID, don’t speak english, have no money and have no insurance… And the hospital absorbs the cost. Sure, the hospital will try to send you a bill, but they know that the migrant farm worker with the amputated toe that they treat is never going to pay a dime of that bill, even if he wanted to.
Canada’s a fine country, but it’s not surprising that with 10% of the population of the US, they do less of everything.
The Amazing Randi was a Canadian citizen. However, he decided to become a US Citizen due to, in part, a run-in with the RCMP.

The number of people emigrating from the US to Canada has increased in the past few years. Even so, in 2005, there were more than twice as many emigrants from Canada to the US than vice versa. Taking populations into account, 8 times as many people per capita migrated from Canada to the US as compared to the other direction. That’s according to this poll which hit the news a while back.
