Golly. I sure done wish it was the '50s again.
If it was (or early sixties anyway), athiest governments would still be machine-gunning familes trying to escape their grip.
Are you drunk? I don’t get it.
Like, in Iraq, or something?
I think he’s parodying the parody of the parody of SSG Schwartz’s thread, “Why don’t Christians skydive?” I don’t know why he felt compelled to, but it is a good topic, regardless.
Valete,
Vox Imperatoris
ETA: Really Not All That Bright, I don’t think Starving Artist was excluding Christian countries, just mentioning that every state atheist country has been oppressive. Although that’s not really fair because if they weren’t oppressive, they wouldn’t be trying to control peoples’ thoughts. You are making the wrong counterargument.
Don’t be ridiculous. Neither the U.S. nor the Iraqi government has set up borders to keep its population in, and through which its citizens can’t pass for fear of being machine-gunned by official government policy, as was the case with famlies and individuals trying to flee East Germany.
And your very own cite shows that the U.S. government is prosecuting those crimes, not ordering them.
A silly, stupid rebuttal.
Are you actually asking this question for realzeys or are you simply introducing a point for discussion?
It’s kind of obvious that state-enforced atheism would be oppressive. State-enforced belief systems of any kind are oppressive.
The difference between Starving Artist and atheists, however, is that he wants the USA to go back to being a good God-fearing country where darkies are shown back to the rear of the bus and women don’t show their ankles, while atheists would just like to live in a country where we got to choose our religion and don’t have to worry about their kids being indoctrinated into somebody else’s.
Enforced atheism is a ideologically driven policy. The Communists rejected theism as a tool of the bourgeoisie, and thus something to be destroyed. They didn’t hate religion because they thought it sucked- they hated religion because Marx told them it sucked. It was, in a sense, a kind of religion in itself.
Atheists, for the most part, see theism as simply an idea.
I am being no more or less ridiculous than you. You’re suggesting that state-sponsored atheism is analogous to being a secular state. The opposite is true.
And I’d just like a pony.
No offence intended, really. But you should stop seeking absolute principles whose application would nicely solve all human issues (I include your interest in libertarianism, here). There’s no such thing.
That’s right. There have certainly been Christian (and Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, etc.) governments that have been murderous. Still though, on nowhere near the scale of those wrought by atheistic communist countries.
What an unadulerated load of shit that is! And to think I’d included an apology to you above (since stricken) for calling your last post stupid. In reality I had no idea the heights of stupidity you were capable of. (And in that same vein, atheists “want to be free to choose their own religion”?)
I DEFY you to find one single instance, in my 6,600+ posting history, where I’ve said any such thing!
I favor a society that was polite, well-dressed, civil, considerate and far less crass and vulgar than the one that exists today, and that’s all I’ve ever said about the fifties (Well that, and blaming the way things are now on liberals. :D)
It’s you and your ilk who like to extrapolate from that the attitudes you accused me of above, and it’s utter, utter horseshit!
Now I don’t know if you actually believe that crap, or whether you’re being deliberately dishonest, but if you can’t come up with one cite…just one out of my entire posting history…to back up what you said, I’m gonna expect a bigtime apology! And, if you are honest and a manly man :D, you will not hesitate to give it!
So, I’m waiting…
For God’s sake, please don’t make this thread into a trainwreck.
No, and that’s right.
That’s what you get for not clicking links, like you can’t be all bothered and everything.
Okay, the darkies to the back thing was a bit over the top, and I sincerely apologise for that. Do I really need to pull out a cite for the covered ankles thing, though? You alluded to it yourself in the bit I quoted above.
Atheists want us - The People - to be free to choose our own religions. Obviously atheists don’t have much interest in choosing their own religions.
I’ve never said a thing about women covering up their ankles, either. Are you talking about my preference for seeing men and women looking like men and women rather than decades-old teenagers in jeans and t-shirts? If so, there’s a reason for that: people tend to behave better (and to get treated better) when they’re dressed well. And I hardly think a preference for a Jackie Kennedy style of dress is analogous to wanting women to cover their ankles.
Still, I do thank you for the apology.
Or eating their offspring.
Coming up with a short answer: Atheists know that this is the only life you get: So don’t ruin it.
Sorry, Lib. I’m afraid I’ve inadvertently thrown it off the tracks somewhat myself. I just meant to make a quick in and out comment as food for thought and didn’t mean to derail the fun of it, so I’ll back out now. Again, my apologies.
Half Man Half Wit
I do wish you all could get it right. It’s rape and plunder, THEN burn!
Sheesh, you guys would never make good Vikings.
I understand why most people wouldn’t just want to go run amok, but surely there are living people who you think would be better off not staying that way, even though they might not have committed any actual crimes; why not kill them, if you could get away with it?

Amateurs, if you’re going to use a Doomsday Device, you need to think BIG!, I plan to collapse not only reality itself, but any and all potential realities, even if they don’t/havent existed yet, the pre-emptive strike on multiversal reality is the only way to go
Reading that article just bumped “Amok”'s points about 50 billion in the “words that sound funny when you say them a lot” contest.
Well… Why don’t YOU do this? I think the same reasons you wouldn’t would probably apply to many others.
Unless the law is the only reason holding you back. In which case… :takes a few steps back:
