There have been two major drug-smuggling rings operated by or recruiting numbers of Orthodox Jews (including both men and women, Hassidic and Ultra-Orthodox): Guardian link. In the recent bust, they are alleged to have not just smuggled drugs, but helping Colombian cartels launder as much as $1.7 billion. Two of the hiding places for the drugs: under their black hats, and in boxes (normally used to hold prayer scrolls) next to their hearts.
Well, she WAS in Thailand. 
I also know of one Scandinavian ambassador’s daughter who was caught here and did prison time. And one white billionaire’s daughter – a Brit in Hong Kong before the handover, I believe – who tried it on a lark and was caught. Daddy flew in and left a rather, er, LARGE cash deposit for her bail, then Surprise! She disappeared from the country! It was a scandal and outrage was expressed in the media for a few days, then it died down.

Not exactly “white middle class”, but yrs ago (1970’s) in a small Alberta town, a random police stop caught an old geezer red neck farmer in a beat up truck hauling about 16 lbs of pot, in a freaking duffle bag in the back of the truck. Apparently he had been doing this for some time.
I mention this as, at the time, especially, that “type” would never have pinged a cops’ “drug smuggler radar”. When pulled over for some minor infraction, he assumed he was busted and confessed. If he had not, he probably could have driven away with a ticket for a busted tail light.

Stuff like this is why I roll my eyes when people complain that they shouldn’t have to be searched at airport security, because they’re not terrorists (read: Muslim/Middle Eastern). Besides the fact that we have had white American terrorists in comparatively recent years, they’re also checking for drugs, for items illegal to import (like those imported exotic pet smugglers, among others), and for people clueless enough to accidentally bring on things that might alarm other passengers should they fall out of your bag - guns, chemicals, etc.
I think you’re conflating the security checkpoint at the airport entrance with the customs checkpoint at the flight’s disembarkation point. They don’t have beagles sniffing my carry-on when I’m going on the plane. Those Homeland Security clowns telling me to take off my shoes don’t have the slightest clue whether I have a parrot stuffed down my pants, nor do they care.

I’m sure there are plenty of middle class folks involved in the drug trade. I mean your average college and high school student is getting his pot from somewhere, right? Or do people think they all drive into the nearest inner city whenever they need a fix?

The guy who knew Sandra Gregory and recommended the book assures me I was in the same room with her on at least a couple of occasions back in the late 1980s or early 1990s. This guy lived down South but maintained a room in a guest house for his stretches in Bangkok, and she lived in the same building. So I must have run into her when I was over visiting him, although I have no recollection of her whatsoever. Just an ordinary white broad in Bangkok. And honestly, as bad as it sounds, white women get almost zero attention from white men in Thailand, so it’s not surprising I don’t remember her. But that only underscores her ordinariness.
I saw something similar on TV a few years ago. And in many cases they weren’t told beforehand that they would have to carry drugs home after their free vacation. They only learned it just before getting back (and of course if they refused, they wouldn’t get their return ticket).
Kinda-a pair (not really a drug ring) of teens on rumspringa got mixed up in drug dealings, moving meth and coke they purchased from the Pagans motorcycle gang to other Amish youth in Lancaster County, ~ 1997. Headline in the Philly Daily News the day the story broke was: Horse and Druggies.
I personally have met a middle class white male who was a drugs mule.
He had a full head of hair, but used to shave the front of his head to make himself look balding and older, was extremely neat and tidy, and wore a suit.
He did about one “job” every three or four months, lived the life of Riley off the proceeds while letting his hair grow back, then did it again.
