Why don't minimum wage laws apply to inmate jobs?

Like Gandhi, MLK, Nelson Mandela, runaway slaves, Jews hiding from Nazis, drug users, etc?

“Legal” does not mean “right”, “illegal” does not equal “wrong”.

Nice strawman, but the discussion clearly dealt with the general US prison population. You can make some arguments about whether or not our current laws regarding the sale and use of illicit drugs is any good or not, but, most folks in American prison have been convicted of some crime that is not all that controversial, even in other countries (felony theft, assault, drug related crime, etc).

While the severity and manner of our punishment of crimes may not match international norms, the vast majority of our current prison population have been convicted of acts that would be considered crimes in most other countries - acts that (with the potential exception of drug related offenses) would have been considered crimes in most past cultures/civilizations and likely in future cultures/civilizations.
