You look at pretty much any chart showing various measures of welfare (as is being well, not a government handout) and the South is the bottom of the barrel every time. Oddly enough, those maps exactly overlay a map of religiosity. Not to mention it’s hot, humid, and largely a shithole outside of select urban areas. ---

Oh, buddy, have you got it wrong. The south is a wonderful place to live, Year around outside activities. If we have winter weather, ot is limited. Hot and humid, meh, you get used to it. Of course everything has AC, . Bugs are bugs everywhere. Ours are no worse. We have wonderful music and good universitys. As for poverty, it’s a world wide problem, not just ours. I love it in the land of cotton, wouldn’t live anywhere else! ---

In the North, people are rude to your face. In the South, people hide their (sometimes deadly) hatred behind politeness. It’s terrifying. ---

Here in California we have year round good weather, very few bugs, it is seldom hot, almost never humid, and our laws aren’t medieval. ---

But that was SW Louisiana, the heart of Cajun country, and the Catholic French-speaking Cajuns seem to have gotten enough shit from the real southerners to not want to give any to me. Besides all the harm it’s done to the country and the other flaws already mentioned, most of the would-be\* defenders\* of the South make it look worse, not better. You seldom hear terms like “Southern tradition” or “Southern culture” used _except i_n speeches defending things like slavery, misogyny, child abuse, treason, racism, etc. Somebody who listened to the defenders of the South and knew nothing else about it would probably come away with the impression that the South is basically Mordor. ---

The main reason I wouldn’t live in the South is the weather. Western NC, northwest AR, a few other spots maybe in VA are the only places I would tolerate. ---
