The game of football once consisted of a group of players trying to score against another group of players on a large open field. Not any more.
FIFA, in its wisdom, has decreed that drawn football games in knockout competitions should be decided by a penalty shootout.
Unless and until there is a change in the rules then we have to live with that decree. Therefore, in practical terms at least, penalty shootouts are now an integral part of the game of football.
England, and possibly Holland & Italy, must come to terms with the disciplines this imposes. We must learn from those who are more successful at penalties than ourselves.
