Why general anesthesia instead of regional?

When I broke an ankle (they called it that, but it was actually the tibia in the ankle area) they gave me an injection in the spine at the level of the waist and I never felt a thing. Although they certainly drilled and installed a plate. While I had a conversation with the anesthesiologist over why I could breath normally, but not cough. (Because the diaphragm is enervated from the neck while the abdominal muscles were enervated from the frozen area.)

I got really vasovagal at that point; didn’t know whether to puke or shit, but fortunately did neither.
