I was thinking it must be the advertising. I recall how well-loved this guy was, and how everyone was sliding out “Thee unnnnnnnnn-coe-la–Seb’mUp!”
These flickering lightbulbs had been available for years, but became known as “7Up bulbs” after this commercial:
The store I work at had 7-Up when I first started but when Sierra Mist came out it was dropped because the Pepsi guy delivered it. We have it back now though so now we have all three (Sprite, Sierra Mist and 7-Up).
Anyone remember Bubble-Up?
I’m just shocked that apparently Bubble-Up is still manufactured. I havn’t seen that in 30 years.
Slice became Sierra Mist in most markets. I never understood the name change since Slice seems more catchy, especially for a soda that’s supposed to have fruit taste and originally included some fruit juice in it. They had more then just lemon-lime, including orange, grape, and more. Wikipedia says Sierra was in the running for the original name when Slice was chosen.
Yep and Upper 10
I do see Pibb available on fountains that are Coke-brand. At least here in Michigan, it’s a common thing to see(again,* if *its a Coke-brand restaurant).
Where do you buy Ting? I love Squirt-but it is almost impossible to find, here in the Boston area.
…huh. I had no idea that 7 Up wasn’t a Pepsi Product. Over in NZ (and the rest of the world, according to Wiki) 7 Up is licenced and distributed by Pepsi, and is sold alongside Pepsi on the shelves down here. And we call it lemonade . Dr Pepper has almost no market penetration down here: I only ever found it at an obscure hot dog place up in Auckland once.
Haven’t seen Squirt in years, alas. 8(
My favourite soda is Gosling’s ginger beer…
I thought this was going to be about the most recent edition of the Up series of documentaries.
Remember Quirst?
It’s the only pop I can make Squirbon with. Squirt + bourbon is a good, trashy combo on a muggy southern night.
I recently moved from Southern CA to Central FL.
In SoCal, Dr. Pepper is a Coke product. I don’t even know if you can buy Mr. Pibb in cans, but they did have it at all of the McDonalds where I lived instead of Dr. Pepper. The other fast food chains that had Coke products served Dr. Pepper.
In FL, Dr. Pepper is a Pepsi product and Mr. Pibb can be bought easily (as can Mello Yellow, which isn’t common at all in CA).
I don’t notice much difference in the taste between the two.
You guys need to head up to Quebec, which is like the last redoubt of 7-Up. It’s a hundred times more common up there than Sprite, it seems to me. That said, I can buy 7-Up in the grocery store here, and do, often.
Really? No trouble finding it around here. The major supermarkets all carry it. Of course, they haven’t had “Little Squirt” on the container in decades. Actually, I often buy Safeway house brand grapefruit soda. It’s pretty much the same thing, and cheaper (One thing about Safeway - their house brands are often fairly decent).
I think Coca Cola’s market power is the simple answer to OP.
I hadn’t thought about Squirt for decades until I saw it for sale at a U.S. military cafeteria in Bangkok, located (inexplicably? ) inside the Royal Thai Supreme Army Headquarters compound.
I bought squirt at a regular grocery store just a few months ago as a mixer for parties. Squirt makes for a very good mixer for vodka
Squirt isn’t at all rare or hard to find, at least in the Houston area (or back in Oregon where I grew up with it).
7up is everywhere here (Missouri) except restaurants/bars/vending. Every store and gas station has it. I used to buy loose cold cans of it on a semi-regular basis from one gas station - was always delicious, and was definitely better than Sprite and Sierra Mist. You will see 7Up vending somewhere if they have a lot of vending machines, maybe WalMart type places, or just some random place.
Pibb is much more common in vending/restaurants here - I don’t like a lot of soda, basically I will only drink Mountain Drew, Pibb/Pepper, and “white sodas.” A decent amount of Coke places throw in Pibb, and Pibb is seen in vending, especially those newer clear front machines that have soda, water, energy drinks, etc all in the same machine.
7Up is more delicious than the other lemon-lime sodas so it’s a shame you can really only drink it at home.
I’d like to thank the OP for asking this question. I’ve been meaning to bring it up for a while now.
When I was a kid in the early-'70s we had an Un-Cola glass. It was shaped like a Coca-Cola glass, only it had a 7 Up logo on it. And the wide end was the bottom. My sister was a CNA, and came home in the wee hours after a hard evening’s work. She was falling-down tired, and wanted a drink. She grabbed the 7 Up glass and tried to fill it with water – forgetting it was an Un-Cola glass, and trying to fill it from the wide end.
