Why hate crimes laws are bogus

While one can argue that the victims were foolish for not arming and defending themselves*, this is clearly not an example of “gun control,” as Kansas has no laws prohibiting gun ownership.
*(We actually have only the word of our Supremacist author that the victims did not own guns. It is entirely possible that they were simply shocked into being unprepared to use them–a situation that has been demonstrated on any number of occasions where people confused possessing a weapon with the facility and will to use it.)

It is undisputed that he was not. The altercation was finished when Rae went back to the referee’s room and yelled that he was going to attack the ref. Although one is privileged to defend another person, that privilege ceases when the threat ceases.

And while I understand your visceral reaction, Anthracite, there is no reasonable way this tragedy can be viewed as having anything whatsoever to do with gun control.

You two knew exactly what I meant. The line used which is was “A gun in your home will only lead to dead children and you couldn’t use it anyways, because you’re just silly people, and the sheer majesty of The Man invading your home would cause you to meekly hand it over so it could be used on you” line.

Granted, I fully deserve to be nit-picked on for making a bonehead near-nonsequiter like that in the heat of the moment, but I didn’t expect it from you guys in particular. Oh well. I stand by the intent of my words. And I’m still so upset about reading the events which occurred that it is hard to type.

Antracite, I could just as easily point to this tragedy as an example of why tough, effective gun control laws are necessary. After all, if the assholes didn’t have guns, this never could have happened. Simply put, however, once cannot draw any conclusions about the overall effectiveness of gun control or gun ownership from any particular incident, no matter how horrible.

You’re more than welcome to respond, of course, but I’m going to voluntarily withdraw from this particular hijack. No offense intended.

I find that typos are always so much more aesthetically appealing when they appear in bold print, don’t you?

:smack:

Antracite

Well, you forgive me a boneheaded gun control hijack, and I’ll forgive you a typo or three.

december - that’s actually quite clever.
