I have friends aged 30-85, and none of them act that way.

Unfortunately it never lasts; this is the bigoted version of Lucy yanking the football away from Charlie Brown. The foot soldiers of the Right are always betrayed, and they always fall for it again. Because their hate is just that strong.

It’s not like anyone with any awareness of what the Right believes and does ever expected anything else, after all. This is like the [fable of the Scorpion and the Frog](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scorpion_and_the_Frog), except there’s a whole bunch of frog skeletons around and the Frog _still_ goes with the Scorpion.

Uh, the support was more for the democrats from the Hispanics in the past. I expect that a lot will come back for reasons that are too obvious now.

Sure, the propaganda and hate can be there among a good number of Hispanics, and the Republicans exploited it and succeeded in 2024.. but you are forgetting that the Hispanics are finding out that besides being had, they are not blind, they do notice who is hating them now.. More now than before.

Bush also managed that as well; until the hate of the Republicans drove Hispanic voters away again. But now they’ve come back, to the same result. Assuming the US actually has a democracy in the future I expect that in twenty or so years they’ll fall for it yet again, having forgotten the lesson.

The point is that, while you could be right about the hate, I’m pointing out that you are **ignoring** that while a significant number of Hispanics fell for foolishness in the last elections, it does not mean that they will forever ignore that there is even **more** hate coming from the foot soldiers from the right now; sure, they looked then as if they were “allies”. BUT, **that does not last either.** Particularly when the hate is in the open. And so we get the polls that we are seeing now.

Given history I expect they will. It’s not a Hispanic specific thing either, that’s why I said “the footsoldiers of the Right”. The great majority of people who support the Right get screwed over by it, and then _come back for more._ And it’s been that way as long as there’s been a “Right”.

I know history too BTW. Hitler had in reality his foot soldiers fighting against each other for resources. Not only inefficient, but it also turned a lot of those that “came back for more” to be like the ~~Hispanics~~ Italians in WWII. They turned against Germany, for obvious reasons too.

There is not a Hispanic monolith though. I’m sure that if you look under the hood and see exactly who the Trump-supporting Hispanics are, it will not be the indigenous-looking people from the Southwest nor people of Afro-Caribbean descent, but the ones who look white, and are able to claim some white privilege, and understand this can be more of a social advantage than identifying as Hispanic. Think Marco Rubio or Aileen Cannon. Think of the Cuban exile community in Miami, whose families are likely dispossesed property-owners. They’re not confused about why they’re supporting Trump, nor do they have any real solidarity with brown migrants from Guatemala.

They understand that “immigrating the right way” means having white European skin. These people aren’t going to have buyer’s remorse because they bought something of value, a plausible claim on a place in the white-supremacy hierarchy.

The blind spot that exists with regard to bigotry within, so called, racial groups is vast.

Of course it is not a monolith. I know because I’m Hispanic too. I do know about how racist a good chunk of Hispanics are, but prejudice against Hispanics is not only for the color of their skin for the American bigots. That is a big reason why Hispanics are mostly in favor of the Democrats.

What many here are missing is that the ones in power are the ones that mostly sees Hispanics as a monolith. One clear example is Abrego Garcia, the guy deported by mistake to El Salvador, he and his wife are white or barely peach, and yet, they are encountering what it means to be “the others” for the MAGAs.

> **[Abrego Garcia’s wife said she had to move to a safe house after DHS posted...](https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/abrego-garcia-wife-safe-house-homeland-security-address-rcna202761)**
>
> On X, the agency posted a copy of a civil protective order granted to Jennifer Vasquez Sura in 2021 that included their Maryland address.

So, yeah, based on that and the recent polls, I counter that what was is under the hood is becoming once again what was there before, Hispanics with a bit of prejudice against darker Hispanics are finding that they are hating the racist Blondies and the Rubios 🙂 more now and with a reason.

More Hispanics are offering more support to the ones that treat them as human beings as it was before, not the current bastard Republicans that promised them something else.

Except that’s not what’s happening. They’ve helped put into power people who consider them subhuman and evil, and will act accordingly.

Yes there’s no “Hispanic monolith”, there’s plenty of hate between Hispanic subgroups; but that just means they are defeating themselves. Divide and conquer. Such Trump voters are too foolish to understand that while they may hate other “brown people” and regard them as a separate group, the white fascists are not required to share the same system of racism as them, and _do_ consider them all part of a “Hispanic monolith”. And for the white nationalists there _is_ no such thing as “immigrating the right way”.

I’m dubious about this Latino discussion. The NEP poll showed a swing of 14 percentage points among Latinos towards Trump from 2020 to 2024, and this result received a lot of airplay worldwide. But other polls show smaller margins and the NEP poll has received some criticism. Gabriel R. Sanchez:

> I put a lot of caution on the [National Exit Poll’s estimate of 55%](https://www.axios.com/2024/11/07/trump-new-record-latino-voters-exit-poll) for Trump among Latino men, given that similar to the national preelection polls, it is [not designed to capture nuances](https://www.brookings.edu/articles/latino-voting-behavior-bad-polling-leads-to-bad-assumptions/)among sub-groups of the electorate and has been [critiqued in the past](https://unidosus.org/publications/1639-why-getting-latino-voter-exit-polling-right-matters/) for its inability to fully capture the Latino vote.

Summarizing:

> Although the majority of Latino men did not vote for Trump, it is clear that Trump significantly improved his performance among Latino men.

… but maybe by less than 13 or 14 points. But even the high figure doesn’t form much basis for the broadsides depicted in this thread. And it might be as low as ~5 points - which is modest but significant.

> **Footnote**
>
> The 5 points measures the swing from the 2022 midterms to the 2024 election. So admittedly this isn’t an apples to apples comparison.

* * *

Interestingly, Trump’s support was highest among Latino men _under_ 40, 20% of whom were first time voters.

Yes, there’s a gender gap: male Latinos supported Trump by 43%, compared with 32% of Latinas. The take of the Brookings analyst was that economics drove the vote, and Latinos can be won back by the Democrats:

> According to the [2024 American Electorate Voter Poll](https://2024electionpoll.us/), the cost of living/inflation, economy/jobs, housing costs, and health care costs were the top four priorities for Latino men in 2024. Furthermore, although a slim majority of Latino men believed that Democrats would be better than Republicans at addressing their top priority, Latino men were 8% more likely than Latinas to believe that Republicans would be best at addressing their top priority.

> The economy’s importance to Latino men, combined with the perception that Trump and Republicans are better at reducing costs and creating higher-paying jobs, was clearly a key factor in shaping their voting behavior this cycle. However, it is important to put this into context. [Nearly a third](https://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2022/the-construction-industry-labor-force-2003-to-2020/) of construction workers in the country are Latino, a labor force hit hard during COVID-19 closures. Furthermore, we found in our [academic research](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s41996-020-00071-0/tables/2) that a third of Latino families lost their business/were in jeopardy of losing their business, with Latino men being more likely to experience economic stress during the pandemic.

I know the plural of anecdotes is not “data,” but at an event in Corpus Christi a few years ago, I was struck by how the crowd contained a huge number of Trump/MAGA Hispanic folks who were **not** the light-skinned type. They were as dark-toned as anyone. Overwhelmingly, their support for Trump/MAGA was entirely in religious tones - the evil atheist liberals want to destroy America, we must turn the nation back to God, etc. - the same rhetoric you might get from a white Protestant pastor or whatever. Skin color and race wasn’t what these folks were about. It was all about evil godless liberals and the need to stop them.

Until they found that the religious and “god fearing” fathers or grandfathers or other relatives with iffy legal status are being deported.

Trump is now doubly losing the (less impressive as per Measure\_for\_Meusure reported) Hispanic support now because they also see how **unfaithful** Trump is.

> Hebrews 13:1-2 – “…show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels…”

> Luke 4:18-19
> 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
> because he has anointed me
> to proclaim good news to the poor.
> He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,
> to set the oppressed free,
> 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

And for the Hispanics that finally are opening their eyes (as the last polls are showing), Welcome back to noticing what even Jefferson noticed:

> And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever.

That’s how the cycle goes. Conservative non-whites decide to support the Republicans for “cultural” reasons (_aka_ hateful), then get turned off when their support earns them only hatred and abuse. Then a generation or so passes and they’ve forgotten the lesson, and so try sticking their hand in the meat grinder again. Rinse, repeat.

There are absolutely churches like this. That’s a fact. There are documentaries about them. They overwhelmingly support Trump as well.

Fortunately I’ve never attended one (and to be fair, I’m religious but never one for going to church much because my faith is personal).

I’m also from a blue part of the country, which I’m sure is another factor.

Unsurprising. Conservative American Christianity has essentially turned into an extension of the Republican Party, and deifies Republican Presidents in general. And that was _before_ the Republican Party turned into a Trump cult.
