There is plenty of bigotry among the old. Fwiw, when i was canvassing for Harris, i spoke to a lot of people, and because data is always imperfect, i spoke with a lot of Trump voters.
The reasons people cited for supporting trump were mostly economic (“i was doing better under Trump”) and immigration (too many illegals, with both economic and racist comments about why this was a major problem for the US). The racist commentators skewed much older than the economic ones.
By the way, the reason i was canvassing was largely because of fear for my trans friends. But i knew that wasn’t a terribly popular issue, and never brought it up. Not one person i spoke with did, either. That’s absolutely not what drove the recent election.
Your opinion is your opinion, but there’s not much difference between “older religious right-wingers” and “younger irreligious right-wingers” in terms of support for fascism in America anymore. And the older ones have more power to implement it.
Very wise. And I’ve said many times that I don’t believe specific policies on trans people made any difference. But the overall impression that Democrats in Congress are “more focused on helping other people than people like me,” that “Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you”, was IMO very damaging. And hard to get around when you subscribe to a view that classifies people as more vs less privileged, more vs less in need of help, with small minorities needing help the most.
No. It’s just my impression from what I’ve been seeing on social media. And since I’m still young (according to Kimstu, anyway ) maybe I don’t realise how bad the older conservatives were. But always before in my life it felt like things were getting better, that older people had old fashioned attitudes, but young people were more enlightened.
I never used to see anyone calling to deport all non-native people; to ban women from voting and from working; replying to a story about kids dying of Aids due to cancelled USAid by saying it was better to let them die so they wouldn’t come here.
People straight up saying “yes, I’m racist” rather than “I’m not racist, but…” Maybe you don’t think it matters, but I believe the desire not to think of themselves as racist discourages people from greater racism, and the desire not to be seen as racist discourages them from spreading racist ideas. Isn’t that the point of stigmatising this stuff in the first place?
The idea that this is just “stay off my lawn, kids” is a frankly ludicrous one. (And many of them probably aren’t much younger than me anyway.)
Nah. That’s really not the controlling issue here.
There it is.
You’re on a topic that relies heavily on those corrupted sectors of your hard drive that I recently mentioned. In that situation, you tend to fall apart in really dramatic fashion.
I’m sure you don’t love my views, but they are to the left of the average Democratic voter. I’d advise you to save your energy for fighting the current government, the one that’s actually taking your rights away.
Your error is in thinking that young people are more bigoted than old ones. Bigots of all ages have been empowered recently, and this fully explains the changes you see. It’s possible you are right about the age change, but i doubt it, and suggest you look for actual data.
The policy on “transgender views” is exactly the same as the policy on racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. views. I don’t see you talking about that pushing conservatives away. ]
And I’m 99.9% certain that the issue with quoting what the White House said was that the person came off as supporting those views themselves.
The trans rules were just bringing it in line with how other bigotry is treated. I have still seen quite a few transphobic posts on this board, and even have a couple people on ignore for it.
And I hope you do not share those views. Because I generally think you’re decent, and would hate to find out you hate me after I discovered I’m not exactly male.
edit: did not count DT. she’s been on ignore so long I forget she exists. I really wish you guys wouldn’t let her hijack things, even if we can’t get rid of her otherwise.
I was pretty clear that I didn’t. The issue was that both of us linked to materials that promoted extreme bigotry about trans people, and DT thought it was unfair that context was important.
