No, that wasn’t you I was talking to, it was Mahaloth. I clicked quote on the wrong box. Sorry.
At the regular grocery store (Ingles), milk is $3.39 for store brand and 4.37 if you wanna get that fancy Biltmore milk. I have no idea what regular milk at Aldi costs but the almond milk I got yesterday was $2.49. It’s usually a dollar more at the other stores.
I shop at Ingles, like SpazCat, but instead of in Asheville like her, I’m in the tony suburb of Weaverville (lol) where, apparently, milk is more than in the city. But I did just go to Aldi two weeks ago in Asheville, and milk there was $3.39/gal. I don’t know why milk is so high in some parts of the country and not others. I demand an investigation!
I’m mad at Ingles right now. The only thing I get there is Cheerwine in glass bottles. I have found one (1) Ingles that sells these and the last two times I’ve gone there it’s only been gag *Diet *Cheerwine.
Personally I think the prices on everything in Buncombe County is based on zip code.
And I’m grumpy about it, 'cause it was $1.99 just a few weeks ago. They even put up apologetic signs at the Aldi on Montrose near Western when they had to raise the price.
Where is milk flirting with $4 a gallon in Chicago? Marianos, Jewel and Dominicks. I love me some Marianos for many, many things, but I kick myself when I forget to get the milk at Aldi.
I had heard on NPR a few years ago that milk has resisted inflation more than any other popular product due to government subsidizing. Milk at Meijer(our most popular store in Michigan) cost about $2 a gallon in the 1980’s, I think. It’s the same now and, like I said, goes down to $1.69 in the summer at Aldi.
However, 2 years ago(yes I remember), Aldi lowered it to $1.49 about one week a month during summer.
Aldi by us puts a sign out on the road advertising their summer $1.69/gallon deal and leaves it there all summer.
I did my own (google) investigation, and with the sequester, the subsidizing isn’t happening right now, and that’s why milk is so high. When the sequester is over, the price will plummet (can’t wait). And now milk is up to $3.80, bah.
SpazCat, I know, I don’t like Ingles, either. I’d much prefer to shop at Bi-Lo, but all Weaverville has is Ingles and Wal-Mart, with Ingles being closer to run to for quick things like milk. But Wal-Mart isn’t any cheaper on their milk, either.
We have Save-A-Lot stores here in South Georgia. Aldi has only made it as far south as metro Atlanta. The stores are similar, but Save-A-Lot has a couple of advantages over Aldi the way I see it. First, Save-A-Lot has a decent assortment of no-salt-added canned tomato products while Aldi has none. Second, Save-A-Lot has a regular produce section (albeit small) without all of the produce packaged up in advance.
Just got home with some from Dominick’s - $2.29 - it’s cheaper than the Target right next door fer cryin out loud! Dominick’s also has two brands of regular whole milk, though - one brand is $2.29 - the other is $3 something plus.
Best case scenario - I get it for $1.99 at Wal-Mart and buy three gallons at a time.
The closest Aldi to me is over 18 miles away (in a different state). I really can’t justify driving that far for their good prices because we have Big Bunny about 3 miles away. Big Bunny is no Aldi but it has really good prices and is a local business (with 2nd and 3rd generation family members running it now).
I still miss Aldi though. We had one about 2 miles away when we lived in Western MA and we always found amazing deals there.
