Why in the hell is Michael Jackson still so damn popular ?

perhaps you haven’t been for his live concert… i was of your view when i went in… michael jackson was god by the time i walked out. seriously, blew my mind. and i thought “yeah, he used to be good…let’s go to the concert for old times sake…”. next time, i’ll be first in line for tickets.

Well, that and the guy has a massive ego and thinks everyone loves him.

Remember HIStory?

Anyone who thinks that Jackson is not still popular is living in a dream world. Maybe the popularity has dwindled a bit in the US but in other parts of the world, notably Japan, he is still a god.

Personally I think he is incredibly talented, and no, not because he has enough money to buy it as someone else stated. He has people working with him but he contributes a great deal. He is very eccentric, but what genius isn’t? I know quite a few people that have worked with him and they have nothing bad to say about him at all. Just that he is very kind and as professional a performer as there is. Bottom line, he writes great music and has a wonderful voice. I guess its just too hard for people to focus on that rather than the skin color, monkey, face mask, etc…

Mikah Jackson!

For me, lover of punk music, it is that MJ has moves. Back when Thriller came out, the moonwalk was soooo revolutionary. MJ had just fun music. It wasn’t mad or hateful, just great stuff to move to. And he does have some of the best moves I have seen. Compare them to some of the boybands today, and you will see that they are amateurs compared to Mikah in the dance department.

Exactly the same can be said of David Hasselhof.

True, but let them both put out a CD and see who sells more units. Jacksons new album will go platinum worldwide.

According to a CNN.com reader poll, 74% of the people who responded said that Michael Jackson was no longer the King of Pop, but he still sells out shows. Like his recent show at Madison Square Garden.

Oh, I dunno. According to Allied Artists, Hasselhoff had platinum albums in 1990 and 1991, and “the single, ‘Looking For Freedom’, topped the German charts for eight weeks at Number 1, and went gold and triple platinum in the international marketplace.”

Yeah, I realize that he is huge, but mainly in German speaking countries. You would be hard pressed to find a country that MJ didn’t sell well in. I also think that talent has to work into the equation. Hasselhoff is a not a musician or songwriter, only the pretty picture on the package with the talent of Fabio. Jackson, on the other hand, has been on the industry for 30 years. It doesn’t seem that these two performers can really be compared.

Remember the trailer for HIStory? They showed it in movie theaters and everything. That was the most ill-conceived, overblown promotional tool I’ve ever seen. In dubious taste, even for marketing.
And does anybody else find it strange that he basically named himself the “King of Pop” and got the media and the public to go along with it? Every time I hear him referred to thusly, I just think, “what a bunch of lemmings” (and yeah, I know they don’t really commit mass suicide, it’s just an easy reference).

Funny I was just talking about him the other day…

WHY is it that Pee Wee Herman gets caught masturbating in an adult movie theater. his career is ruined, and MJ can molest and PAY OFF children, and …nothing!

He married into musics real royal family to try and give himself credibility as the ‘king of pop’

He married a woman to breed with, and then paid her off to go away and leave him the kids… Ewwwwww.

Why isnt he ostrasized for the extreme weirdo that he is?
I can just imagine what those poor children have to endure living alone with that nut.

Uh, why were no criminal charges filed then?

I think he paid off the families of the molested kids.

Ok, that would explain why there were no civil charges but if the DA had any evidence at all, they would have pursued criminal charges regardless of a payoff. A sex crime against children is a very serious offence. They investigated and apparently didn’t feel they had credible witnesses or any evidence. The whole thing reeks of extortion. Where are the other kids? Pedophiles usually have multiple victims, not one. He was constantly surrounded by kids that adored him, such as the home alone kid. Why was there not one other accusation? The fact is people beliee what they want to, regardless of facts.

Alright, the man is at least as weird as any other royalty. Did you read the “poems and stories” in his “Dancing the Dream”? Ouch. Adolescent at best. The guy has a very good heart, but it was pretty bad. I think he’s taken some pretty serious psychological damage.

He can dance the pants off of anyone else, though. There’s no way around that.

Ok The NY times review appeared this morning. After Saturday and Sunday I wondered if they had forgotten about the damn thing. I read the review in the paper and it’s also online but I don’t know how long the link will last. (it’s free to register)http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/10/arts/10JACK.html

The good ol’ NY Times and New Yorker Magazine. Sometimes You read a review and when you get to the end you aren’t sure whether it’s a good or bad review. My take was that this concert was not worth the money. “The show wasn’t exactly a concert”. There were long breaks between songs because the event was being taped for a television special. There were numerous celebrity testimonials to Jackson, so that “for the first half of the show he was a potentate, not a performer.” Jackson watched the other performers from a sort of “royal box,” receiving adulation from the stage and blowing kisses in return. The long breaks between songs meant that the pace of the show suffered. Marlon Brando rambled on about sick children. Liza Minelli sang a few lines from “Over the Rainbow” (for some of the other acts that appeared use the cite).

The actual “reunion” of the Jackson 5 lasted only 20 minutes (one could argue that their hits were all of the 3 minute radio variety so that a lot of songs can be sung in 20 minutes–some Beatles concerts were only that long) and the reviewer implies that Michael came very close to blowing that part of the show. The man can still moon walk, though.

Cuz da boy can DANCE. And being married to a guy who cannot clap with the rhythm (seriously), I can appreciate that in a man.

And he writes some catchy tunes.

I would disagree, however, about the poster who implied that he is a celebrity because he’s a freak. He was a well-respected artist and THEN he became a freak. His freakiness has been detrimental to his popularity, IMO.

As a child of the 80’s I would like to say that the guy is amazing. I can remember trying to moon walk with my friends in elementary school. It doesn’t get any better than that.

My, that was a lovely thought, Casdave!

Getting involved with threads like this is a no-win situation, but…

…Lockfist, I gotta go with you on this. I REALLY don’t get the MJ thing. And the funny thing is…nobody I know likes him.
I can not like someone but appreciate their talent (e.g. Elton John), but M is just not that talented. He stole the moonwalk, and I agree that if you can hire the best choreographers in the world for months almost anyone could dance well. But all that shouldn’t matter, he calls himself the King of Pop. Pop ia a musical genre. Strip away MTV, the million dollar sets, etc and you nuthin’.
I would love to see him setting on a stool with an accoustic guitar and do an MTV 'Un-plugged" set.
