Why is Don Bradmans average reported to 4 significant figures.

As Maceman said, the two numbers involved in the calculation essentially have infinite significant digits. While you don’t say 70.00000000000000, precisely 70 dismissals were recorded. Not somewhere between 65 and 74, not somewhere between 69.5 and 70.4. Exactly 70.

Any error in the number is a result of inaccuracy, not inprecision. And the former does not affect significant digits.

No you didn’t imagine it. Boycott averaged over 100 in both 1971 and 1979.
