Why is Gov Hogan so popular?

Where’s he stand on guns, abortion and immigration?

Hogan steamrolling Jealous. Showing surprisingly strong in B-More and PG county. Jealous strong among ideological “white liberals”. “White liberal” now means Bernie-Bro apparently. Hogan dominance in Baltimore county could shift local elections to Republicans.

Is it this easy for Republicans? Could they mimick Hogan’s success in other parts of the country where Democratic machine politics prevails?

Become vocal critics of Trumpism? No, I don’t think that will be easy for most Republicans to do.

Eh. Hogan was popular before Trump was on the radar. Not a factor.

IIRC he’s signed or indicated he’ll sign some gun control laws. He’s personally opposed to abortion but considers it a settled matter and won’t support laws to restrict it. I don’t recall anything about immigration. But I’m sure punching
Hogan MD immigration
into Google would get you an answer faster than typing out questions here.

As much as he probably resists the label, this is also known as being “pro-choice”.

It is a partisan political tactic to lump abortion positions into binary pro-choice and pro-life. There are many opinions on abortion if you ask people. It’s a textbook wedge issue for political party fundraising.

As a Maryland resident, I have no real sense for why Hogan is popular. Personally, the school year thing has pissed me off so much that I would vote for anyone else.

Could you explain why the school year thing pissed you off so much?

Sure. Summers are enormously expensive and logistically challenging. I’d strongly prefer a shorter summer, not a longer summer. Also, for a variety of reasons, it’s much easier for our family to take a vacation over spring break than during the summer, but now we don’t have a spring break.

My kids go to Howard County Public Schools. They have a Spring Break this year.

In MoCo, we get the Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Monday around Easter off. (Having both the Friday before and the Monday after Easter as state-mandated holidays is also BS, but that isn’t Hogan’s doing.)

Well, I’m not sure why that is not a “Spring Break”

And besides, since it looks like each county is different WRT Spring Break, it doesn’t seem to be Hogan’s fault.

I think Spring Break is traditionally a week long M-F period bookended by the weekends. Starting it three days into the week and carrying it a day into the following week really isn’t the same thing, especially if planning a trip during that period.

Spring break is an outcome of hard choices MoCo had to make about implementing this executive order. (The options, as I understand them, were to give up teacher workdays, Jewish/Muslim holidays, or a couple of days of spring break.) But we still have an absurd 11 weeks of summer where the kids are busy forgetting a good chunk of they learned over the past school year, and an increased burden on parents who have find and pay for camps or child care or other ways for the kids to spend their time.

Well luckily, you have a couple of extra weeks of summer break to plan a vacation

I see what you are saying. I for one, would love school to be all year round, but that will never happen. Having a longer summer works out for me though.

Thanks for your thoughts on it.
