# Why is Liz Cheney taking this lying down?

If Trump had achieved even an _average_ level of presidential competence his administration would have responded normally to the pandemic and he would have been reelected in a walk.

It was an absolute political gift of a horrible health disaster. He bungled his way into office through crude populist rhetoric and on the backs of an over-crowded field of mediocre candidates, an exceptionally polarizing opponent and an insanely ill-timed nothing burger of a FBI memo. He bungled his way out of office through crude populist rhetoric, a boringly non-polarizing opponent and a staggering and frankly murderous display of incompetence when handed a sure-fire winner of a campaign issue.
When I (reluctantly) stop and think about it I still find the ongoing Trump era just incredibly surreal.

Nitpick: Arnold S. actually has a sharp mind under that beefcake exterior, and a firmer grasp of American ideals than most of his fellow Republicans, even the non-insane ones.

At best it would be becoming Episcopalian. Which in this case would mean becoming an Independent that caucuses with the Rs, similar to what Bernie does on the Democratic side.

Then the Republicans would just be a conservative party like they were under the Bushes. We would oppose them on ordinary political grounds.
