why is my hard drive rrrrring?

take it off, i certainly can.

i was going to today but although i’ve had my fingers in there before, my dad is quite insistant that he be the one to do it.

so i guess we’ll have to wait until tomorrow.

“If anybody wants a sheep, that is proof that he exists.”

well mega roo,

if you are certain that this is coming from your hard drive, then i don;t know!

but ig you are not sure, then i got a couple of answers. IT could be the fan above your cpu chip. If you do alot of activity on your computer, it could switch to overdrive, becom alot louder! or when you boot up your computer, the fan will turn on really loud because it is cold, and trying to suck warm air into the comp.

Another possibility could be your internal speakers. DO you mess around with your computer hardware alot? If so, maybe you could have crossed some wires and connected your internal speakers to your hd somehow, so every time there is hd activity, you would hear it

I don;t know, don;t quote me on it!

Good idea, mega.

Let your Dad be the one mit der poppencorken und schpitzenschparken mit der fuzencrackenpoppen, also schnappen der schpringenwerk.

That’s techno jargon for us computer types who have no life.

Voted as: The poster you’d most like to meet.

I demand a recount.

it only ever used to rrrr when it had been off overnight in a room with an open window. recently, it’s much more often BUT not all the time.

like right now, it’s as quiet as ever.

and really, the only time i’ve had my hands in there is when i was hooking up my burner. so no, i don’t really mess in there at all.

“If anybody wants a sheep, that is proof that he exists.”

The first sentence told me what I wanted to know.

It’s the fan. Be happy it’s not the hard drive.

Your Dad will fix it easy.

I’m with WallyM on this one. I work for a hard drive manufacturer, and I’ve seen everything. I’ve never seen a drive make the kind of noise you describe. Sometimes it might become noticably louder if there is a problem with motor bearings, but certainly not that dramatic.

The vast majority of hard drive failures result in the drive simply not spinning up, or (altho it’s becoming less common) head-crash/contamination scenarios where data at certain locations becomes unreadable, but there would be no auditory clues in that scenario, save perhaps the sound of the drive+os attempting to re-read the affected sectors.

On the other hand, I’ve had plenty of power supply fans exhibit this symptom over the years, and I’ve had to replace a few. In fact, my current power supply is starting to do this intermittantly. Anyone have any idea what causes this? Also, when I have had these power supply RRRing sound problems, i’ve noticed that the fan is usually not spinning. You can check that visually without opening your system up.

‘If the latter you need a new fan assembly. They’re
not expensive.’

Sure they are, they are part of the case power supply. Unless you bought one of the other two you can use with an Atx case.

I don’t think forty bucks is a big expense.

well, i got a little stern with it last night and it has been quiet ever since.

it’s also in the nake and doing no more than purring, so yes, i’m pretty sure it was the fan.

thanks everyone for your help.

Seems to me that if you’d just downloaded “rrrr-2000”, none of this would have come to pass.

if you decide to buy a new power supply, you can get a 250 watt ATX (for Pentium II and III) for $16 at www.voltexcomputers.com . Look under “cases”
you can get a 300 watt ATX for $18 at www.thecomputercenter.com/cas.html . Or if you don’t want to order, be sure to check small computer stores before you go to Best Buy. save a lot of money that way.

tough the cpu fan when it is making the noise. If it stops when you stop the fan, just replace the cpu fan. Most cpu fans are made by evil green-skinned elves inside the earth, and the -green- skinned elves are rarely concerned with quality control.

new developments:

whenever the cover is taken off, it doesn’t rrrr at all. so, is it just the fan trying super hard to suck in some air and cool it off when it’s on… or what?

if wishes were fishes, we could walk on the ocean.

um… sounds like you’re getting vibration in the case. put the cover back on and use more screws when doing so and tighten those screws well. then if it is still “rrr-ing” see if you can get the noise to stop by pressing down on certain parts of the case. if either of these things stop the noise, it’s the case rattling.

hm, it seems like WAY too much noise to be rattling. like, it is really REALLY loud.
