Somewhere on the board, there’s an active question about whether the iPhone was originally designed to attract fingerprints so users would bond with the phone by having to polish it frequently. Perhaps Apple thought it was a great idea but applied the fingerprint idea to the camera lens alone. ---

There is a known issue with iPhone more advanced cameras if subject to vibration from a motorcycle they will go out of focus. > Apple Warning: Motorcycle Vibrations May Damage iPhone Camera.\*\* Although the iPhone camera shaking issues may be caused by various other factors, on September 10, 2021, Apple announced that exposure to high amplitude vibrations might cause iPhone vibration damage and camera glitching. ---

IANA Apple fan; rather the opposite. But if they did have that problem 4 years ago it’s a darn good bet current production iPhones don’t have it. 4 years is an eternity in that business. Now the OP’s phone may well be of that vintage. ---

Lidar is basically radar that uses light. It’s used to get an idea of what’s around the car (like in adaptive cruise control, I think.) ETA: maybe not specifically for adaptive cruise, but it’s used in driving assistance features. Tesla is kind of famously against using it in their cars, relying on visual sensors. ---

Is it still happening? What was the weather like? Lenses can fog over in the right conditions, including humidity & temperature differentials.
