Why is porn banned in American prisons?

Have we even established that porn is banned in all American prisons?

Porn is banned in American prisons because, as is evident from this thread, many Americans think of prisoners as violent rapist/murderers who deserve any crap that happens to them, and would happily subscribe to a channel to watch prisoners being tortured, if it were available. (See: the popularity of all those Lockup programs that MSNBC shows on the weekends). The concept of “non-violent offenders” is too difficult for their little heads to grasp.

“Pornography? I’ve been looking at it all my life and it hasn’t affected me anything.”

Given that stuff coming in to a prison goes through some sort of vetting process, I can see how prison employees would rather not take on the task to vetting porn.

PhD level strawman, congratulations.

I think porn should not be available because some prisoners are predisposed to violence and don’t believe we should agitate them because I don’t want anyone to be raped.
Is that too difficult for you to wrap your little head around?

You may disagree with the line of thought but please don’t assume I want something bad to happen to someone, it’s quite the opposite in fact.
As long as we have QtM in the thread I’d like his oppinion…

Qadgop the Mercotan do you see porn as an avenue for relief or as a potential for instigation in the prison system?

I see it more as a safety valve than as a threat. By a large margin.

I think the current system in my organization works well enough in that it’s tolerated and there’s no witch hunt to eradicate it and punish the guilty, but we’re also not making it widely available either.

A female CO has noted to me that if a typical inmate has access to porn (and sufficient privacy to use it discreetly), he’ll be far less likely to act out sexually in front of her. (i.e those “Shirley, this one’s for you!” <<fap fap fap>> moments happen far less often.)

Given his background I bow to QtMs opinion.

Do you think that sexually suppressing a bunch of people who are already potentially violent is a good idea?? :dubious: I can’t see any way that giving access to porn to inmates would make the situation worse, and can see several that might make it better.

As to the OP, no idea, but it’s probably a hold over from the whole punishment thing…plus there is still a puritanical streak in the US that manifests in silly and, to me me, pointless stuff like this from time to time.

No. As I said, porn is allowed in NY prisons.

We have a Media Review Committee. They actually spend most of their time checking for gang stuff, which is a lot more subtle than porn.

Interesting. What can you tell us about the actual rules and process? For example, do you ban materials in foreign languages or require that they go through an extra-special investigation/translation? Is there an appeals process if an inmate disagrees over whether some material is or is not porn or gang related, or whether or not porn or gang stuff should or should not be fully banned?

I suspect it’s because there’s a substantial portion of voters who object to it on principle and the incarcerated masterbation lobby is weak because everyone else is indifferent.

So they’ll need a few of these, I guess?

It’s not true that masturbation makes you weak!!!

… um … wrong meme … nvm …

I was never a member of the MRC so my knowledge is second-hand. It’s three people and they have a set of guidelines for what’s not allowed.

As I said, the most common problem is gang material. Somebody gets a magazine and there’s a picture inside of some rapper flashing a gang sign. Not allowed. Usually we just cut out the page and allow the rest of the magazine in. The main problem is some gang signs are subtle and you don’t notice them unless you know what you’re looking for. Most people would know this is gang related. But would you notice something like the way a person’s shoes are laced up or if he’s got a pocket turned inside out?

Material in foreign languages is supposed to be translated. But I’ll admit that realistically, it’s usually just let through unless there’s a specific reason.

There is a formal appeals process. But you’re going to be appealing the decision of the local MRC to the people who wrote their guidelines. So unless the local MRC has started inventing its own rules, the appeal is going to be denied.

So we give them all these new ideas about sex.

And then eventually we release them.

Yeah good idea.

That apart, sob, sob , we’re making their lives less pleasant by not allowing them it.

Its almost enough to make you not want to go out and mug an old age pensioner.

If you can’t do the time, then don’t do the crime.

See if you can wrap your head around post 22.

Oh, please; this is right out of the same worldview that if we don’t talk about sex to teenagers they won’t think of it on their own.

See? It is all about “punish punish punish”. Who cares about what the effects are as long as we get our sadist rocks off?

Yep read it !

And your point is ?

Yep totally right.

If it was down to me I’d punish the little pieces of filth as much as I could.

As to the teenagers bit, we’re not talking about teenagers, we’re talking about violent psycopaths.

And if it were up to me I’d have each and everyone of them executed.

And I would personally do the job myself if asked.

Though I’d have a crack at get my expenses back.

Fucking good luck if you try that with the British Civil Service.

Fucking Fascists!
