Why is the Eastern time zone the "standard" in the USA?
At which time New York city was the center of the broadcasting universe. Los Angeles didn’t pick up steam until later.

I Love Lucy was the first sitcom to be filmed in LA rather than NYC.
I am full of crap about the Oscars, and am conflating them with some other awards shows, it seems (from wiki):
Yup. My wife and I work in film and tv, and go to Oscar parties with friends whose movies did not get nominated (awwwww), and the parties are always early.

Used to be, when the Oscars were done on Monday instead of Sun, we’d get a day off. No one worked, everyone was at a party or the actual awards themselves.
Because not just the USA but the whole World revolves around us.

We are the engine that runs the universe as you know it. Thats right, Us!

If it were not for us the Sun wouldnt even rise over you and you wouldnt need a time zone.

THAT, sir, is the FIRST state to ratify the Constitution of 1787, I’ll have you know!

Well, I had to give them SOME props… :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a professional job that requires lots of conference calls. Our colleagues all over the world have to make sure that they don’t extend past 5 pm Eastern Time. That includes people in California who have to make sure they wrap things up with us by 2 pm their time.
Wow, to have such consideration from my PST coworkers! I get so tired of meeting invites that start at 7PM EST from California coworkers.

MeanJoe

I think some of you “Centralians” might have something here. Let’s start Primetime around, say, 7:00 your time. Then bump us “Easternians” up one hour for our prime time… wait… see, now I’m confused.

I got it, 8:00 CST, then 7:00 EST… shit. That’s not gonna work either.

Not so. The Hollywood-produced Amos ‘n’ Andy (1951–1953) and The Life of Riley (1949–1950) both preceded it. Amos ‘n’ Andy, which went on the air four months before I Love Lucy, was filmed at Hal Roach Studios with a multiple-camera setup, an innovation usually misattributed to Desilu.

And some technocrats prefer to say UTC. Which, in any case, does indeed rule.

You are forgiven only because you are in Hampshire.

Delaware is the Henchman of the Boston-DC corridor.

Because broadcasting it in Eastern time means nobody has to stay up any later to watch it. If games were broadcast at 7 pm Pacific then it would start at 10pm Eastern.[Magiver

I am sure glad they don’t broadcast games at 7 pm Pacific! Why does Time Warner delay Yankee games and ranger games till 10 PM EST, when they play in Calif.?
Especially when radio and TV was live.
And live radio broadcasts were taped and replayed in the West later. It is relatively harder to tape at 8pm PST then send the tape back in time to play at 8 PM EST.

As for Oscars - they were on just after we moved from NJ to CA, and it was a treat to watch them and not have it be midnight.
