This is sounding like a situation where her parents and the others who love her just need to bite the bullet and accept that she needs to be reliant on society for her support.

I agree.

Not everyone can work a traditional job. In all likelihood someone will have to take care of her.

Having said that, I once knew a business owner who only hired disabled people. He manufactured small electronic controllers, and he hired disabled people to assemble and solder them while each worked at home. Not sure how legal it was.

Sounds like a “sheltered workshop” in which people with disabilities can be paid less than minimum wage. People dispute whether it’s a good thing or not. It’s quite legal if done properly:

> **[Sheltered workshop](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheltered_workshop)**
>
> The term sheltered workshop refers to an organization or environment that employs people with disabilities separately from others, usually with exemptions from labor standards, including but not limited to the absence of minimum wage requirements.
> In the United States, an exemption in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 allowed a lower minimum wage for people with disabilities, intended to help disabled World War I veterans have opportunities for employment. Since then, non-profit organization...

Yea, I have no idea how much he was paying them. He once said something along the lines, “They are very happy to get the work, and it feels good to know I’m helping them.” But at the same time I suspect he was getting a “good deal,” economically-speaking. Personally I don’t have a problem with it. Then again, I’m a staunch proponent of laissez-faire economics. 🙂

> **Rick** , there were so many typos in the post that prompted that question that even a Texan could not have made them. I add in the OP’s other thread about his “niece” that I linked to above, and I think we’ve got a troll.

When I read this post a few days ago I thought you were being overly harsh and jumping to conclusions, **Frank** , but today I saw that **ArtzWolf** has started a [CS thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=745420) asking for advice on his _Girl Genius_ slash fiction. He mentioned both in this thread and in the one about [his niece’s dating prospects](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=744436) that _she_ writes _Girl Genius_ slash fiction:

> [@ArztWolf](#):

> Her writing is really good, but its mostly Girl Genius slash.

> [@My niece and dating.](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/my-niece-and-dating/708101/32):

> Her main outlet (besides volunteering) is writing Girl Genius slash fiction, mainly between Maxim and either Dimo or Oggie. Just reading one of her stories, you can tell she is in pain.

This strikes me as an oddly specific hobby for an uncle and niece to share. **ArtzWolf** has also mentioned that both he and his niece volunteer at animal shelters, which isn’t particularly unusual in and of itself, but it’s rather strange that **ArtzWolf** and his niece have so many common interests – especially since they don’t even live near each other.

I’m posting this not because I’m excited about playing troll hunter, but because I think there’s a good chance we’re dealing with a troubled person who is indulging in some sort of fantasy here. If that’s the case **ArtzWolf** I wanted to let you know that we’ve seen this sort of thing before, and it hasn’t ended well. The SDMB can be a supportive place, but we don’t take kindly to being lied to. If your niece with special needs is fictional, if you _are_ the “niece” and your supportive uncle is fictional, or if you’re otherwise posting under false pretenses here, it would be best for you to either come clean with us now or go away quietly.

Meh, I stopped at the absurdity of an EMT certification that can be gotten in a handful of months despite a significant issue with math and no physical abilities.
