In retrospect, I think that it was partly due to pure hubris on my part. At 45, I’d had quite a few relationships, which covered the spectrum from 100% committed to 100% casual and I basically thought I’d seen it all. I never imagined I could be blindsided so completely.

That, and…

Both of mine were catalyzed by physical separation.

After high school I went pretty far out of town for college and she stayed in our home area. It wasn’t as easy to stay in touch back then and when I went back in the summer the spark wasn’t there, so we just stopped seeing one another. I don’t know how her life worked out, but I wish her well.

After college, the same thing. I moved out of the country, and so even phone calls weren’t really an option. She reconnected on social media and I learned that she had come out as lesbian, so it wasn’t going to work out anyway. Again, I don’t know how her life worked out, but I wish her well.

Current relationship is A-OK even though we spend a lot of time separated.

My first serious boyfriend was in high school after my parents were killed. Looking back, I honestly think it was a subconscious effort to replace loss. He was a nice guy but, after we moved from MA to Chicagoland, it died a natural death.

My next major boyfriend that I was attracted to because of his good looks and physique was on steroids and was unstable emotionally. When I broke up with him, he stalked me and almost killed me. He actually went to prison for a few years. Other than that, nothing really notable or serious.

That is a pretty significant ‘other than that’.

Glad you are ok.

That’ll do it for sure. Glad you survived mostly intact.

Well, as far as relationships go, they aren’t much.
