**Two Lovely Black Eyes** Evidently an old song written for British music halls: > [https://youtu.be/RzesKlv5NOM](https://youtu.be/RzesKlv5NOM) This is often played at events with Scottish country dancing, and I always thought it was a romantic ballad about _brown_ eyes until I heard the lyrics being sung. The “Gretna Green” mentioned in the first verse is a small town in southwestern Scotland, right across the border from England. It’s famous for being a place to which young English couples traditionally elope. IIRC (I was there many years ago), the bridal registry is in a blacksmith’s shop where the ceremony takes place.
