Is it just me, or are there a lot of newbies around lately? (For that matter, it seems like there’s a fair number of _rude_ newbies.) What’s up with that? Was there an article on the Straight Dope in Newsweek or something? -Ben ---

The theory I’ve seen around is that school is out, and a lot of kids are bored, so they join. Take that as you will. ---

Think of it as a social service. Would you rather your kids hanging around the mall getting up to no good, or signing up for the SDMB and maybe even learning something? ---

Hi. One data point. Just moved back to the USA from Bangkok, TH, in Frankfurt, DE before that, in Geneva, CH before that. Not sure how long this board has been around, but I haven’t seen too many folks from before 2000. I had been out of the country for three years. I have been reading Cecil for years and years, originally his books, then hunted for and found his column. Hadn’t thought about the Straight Dope[sup]TM[/sup] for a while because in these other countries it can be a bit more of a chore to get Internet access, or just plain expensive and frustrating because of speed constraints, although I have always had access at work. First found the column on line probably sometime in March, but was way too busy with work to jump in. The reason we returned to the States was at least partially the economic downturn, coupled with the high cost of expats. So, if not for the economy bottoming out, might not be here yet. Blame me on Alan Greenspan and the Bear Market then 😉 As for the rude part, I am trying to behave. Please let us Newbians know if the behaviour is borish, gently but firmly at first, then more forcefully. Sometimes the new and young don’t recognize that their behaviour is flouting established conventions. Even we olders ones can be a bit thick at times. ---

Let me second that good opinion, I think you’re doing great! The greater majority of our members are pretty fabulous, even brand new . . . it’s just that tiny bunch of jerks that get all the attention. your humble TubaDiva Administrator
