The past few days you’ve said a lot of …well, the forum prevents me from expressing how I feel about it, but suffice it to say that a lot of it wasn’t true.
You claimed that he didn’t justify his satire, just claimed that it was satire and this isn’t, by fiat. This is completely untrue. He gave specific reasons; the Joker caused chaos, death, and destruction, smiling throughout, and George Bush never seemed at all bothered by the carnage of either war he started.
Apart from being a depiction of Obama you wouldn’t see in a photograph, I don’t see the parody.
No, please, say it. I’ve only posted in one other debate thread in months (and that was only like six hours ago) to respond to a specific question from elucidator that he promptly forgot he asked me, so…please. Maybe you’re responding to my devastating suggestions for members of G.I. Joe? You don’t like the Tommy Gavin suggestion? I know it was controversial…I posted a couple thoughts in the Hell’s Kitchen threads, is that it? I said I liked the show Hung - is that some sort of no-no? By all means, run a search of my most recent posts (I was limiting myself to one post every couple of days to wean myself off the forums, so I know for a fact that there’s not a lot to go through).
But seriously, put up or retract, and it better be “the past few days” of evidence, because I’m just DYING to know what you think I did. And then this hijack wll be over.
I never said that he didn’t justify the satire. If that’s your impression, you’re wrong wrong wrong. Point out where I said that. You can’t, because I didn’t. I just paraphrased that he said his was satire and the other wasn’t. What’s the point of paraphrasing if you want me to repeat the whole thing?
Because you don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t so. I didn’t say it was good parody.
Your paraphrase had a very strong connotation of exactly what CC read into it. The sentence “Making Obama the Joker just isn’t” is likely the guilty party, since the word “just” very strongly implies that the speaker had nothing more to say.
Your paraphrase was poor.
I don’t really agree with the guy you paraphrased, though.
I can almost buy that, but, ironically, the word “just” was specifically mentioned by Friedman: " The Obama/Joker image just doesn’t work as satire, humor or anything else." I stand by my statement. In any case, they seem to have problems with the first part of my paraphrase, not the second. Shrug.
That’s silly, though. A paraphrase is only as useful as the meaning it conveys. If you’re conveying the wrong meaning, don’t stand by it. Change it.
It’s a small point, but an annoying one, when people refuse to say, “I didn’t word that all that well. Lemme try again, or maybe just ignore my paraphrase and read the cite.”
Whatever your opinions of Shodan’s politics are, you have to admit, this is right on the money. I’m almost as sick of hearing lefties scream “racism!” as I am with righties screaming “socialism!”
Can anybody explain to me that last quoted sentence in the article – The only thing missing is a noose."? What does that have to do with anything? The Joker-socialism connection is strenuous enough, connecting that whole hodgepodge to racism then becomes patently ridiculous, but then the suggestion that you’d only have to add a noose to socialist Obama Joker to make it even more racist is… I don’t really know what.
Glenn Beck, the second most popular RW hack on TV, called Obama a racist over his handling of the Gates incident. I’m not sure what he thought about the Boston Police officer who called Gates a “bannana eating jungle monkey” in email a week later, but presumably it was just satire.
They (i.e., a bunch of Republicans and Limbaugh type radio/TV pundits) also keep insisting that Sotomayor is a racist because of one thing she said a long time ago… which is exactly the kind of super-sensitive Political Correctness they usually rail about.
Educate me then. In what way is my paraphrase of the original sentence, “The Obama/Joker image just doesn’t work as satire, humor or anything else.” as “Making Obama the Joker just isn’t [satire],” taking note that your specific objection is my using the word “just.” What meaning did I not convey?
