At least British MPs get paid now; until 1911, most MPs got nothin’. They were expected to be independently wealthy or to keep doing their day job.

It is normal for a very quick transition to take place here. It is expected that the outgoing PM (and Chancellor) will move out very quickly. Kenneth Clarke memorably turned up driving a van he had hired to move all his stuff out in.
