Why the .co in .co.uk and others?

I wish the whole .com domain had never been invented, or at the very least that US companies would have been compelled to use .co.us. I love the .us domain. Much easier to type ci.chi.il.us for the City of Chicago in the state of Illinois in the US. It’s clear, it’s concise and it’s accurate.

Personally, the whole thing would have been done a lot better if Jon Postel hadn’t died. A whole huge and inflexible bureaucracy sprang up to do a job that he handled in his spare time.
