Why the dearth of songs about women's love for their guy?

Great list. I guess the main thesis in the OP is incorrect.

Stand By Your Man is not about a woman telling a guy that she loves him or he is special, it’s just a woman telling other women to stand by their men

Mmm, your kisses - sweeter than honey; but guess what: so is my money.

She loves the guy and gives him everything; she just wants something in return, too.

I was just bein’ silly that there are songs that involve not just love, but twists on the topic, too.

EDIT: To a degree. It’s still not clear if the number of songs about the two genders are comparable. But there do seem to be many more songs about men than I had thought.

There was some argument about Taylor Swift with this thread, but no songs by her were cited. The first such song that came to my mind turned out to be hers: “Mine” by Taylor Swift. Seems like a good fit to the requested type of song.

Sheesh, just off the top of my head, without a moment’s thought:

I Fall to Pieces
Love Has no Pride
Misty
Since I Fell For You
At Last

I’d have to double-check, but I believe that most of these could be sung by either sex, but are usually sung by women, and probably intended that way.

Yeah, these are oldies. So would be any songs about any other topic, answered by me. Except “Forget You” which I only know because my soul band plays it (great song, too). So yeah, I’m out of date.

Hell, Hopelessly Devoted to You by ONJ from the Grease Soundtrack. That’s a ripper.
And then he kissed me by The Crystals
Leader of the Pack by The Shangri-Las
Baby Love by The Supremes

Hunt around the girl groups. You’ll find SCADS of them. You need to expand your repertoire.

Blondie: Denis

Mary Wells: My Guy

Son of a Preacher Man

Lesley Gore

OK, for some stats, I found two lists of songs
[ul]
[li]Songs with Girls’ Names in the Title[/li][li]Songs with Boys’ Names in the Title[/li][/ul]

As a first cut approach to counting which songs are about what the OP is referring to, we just count the songs in each list
[ul]
[li]Songs with Girls’ Names in the Title: 658[/li][li]Songs with Boys’ Names in the Title: 462[/li][/ul]

Of course, the above is not too reliable, since a lot of those songs are not about love or crushes. If I can narrow the stats down I will post an update.

“This Love is Ours” by Taylor Swift fits.

So does (in an admittedly creepy way) “Better Dig Two”.

Also:

“I Could Have Danced All Night.”
“So This Is Love.”
The reprise of “Part of Your World”.
“Once Upon A Dream.”

Fleetwood Mac- You Make Loving Fun. Written by Christine McVie to her husband… no, not really. She wrote it for her lover at the time, who was NOT John McVie, but (I think) the band’s light or sound guy.

The OP’s premise seems to be the reverse of the truth to me. I don’t have statistics to back me up, but my impression is that, if anything, the proportion of songs sung by women that are about how they love some some man is considerably greater than the proportion of songs sung by men that are about how they love some some woman. This may be more true the further you go back in time, though.

I like the way you think. That was the first one that popped into my mind too.

If you were a teenager in that sweet spot 5-10 years ago when everybody had computers and downloaded music but not everybody had an mp3 player in their cell phones you would have gotten at least one CD from your girlfriend full of songs about women being in love with men. Two of my favorites from mine:

Go to Heaven by The Pierces

HWC (Hot White Cum) by Liz Phair. NSFW lyrics, she calls her lover’s ejaculate “the meaning of life,” and really, what guy wouldn’t swoon when he was told that?

If you’re looking specifically for pop songs, these are a couple years old but how about:

I Wanna Love You Forever by Jessica Simpson

Born To Make You Happy by Britney Spears

Incongruous with the number of Country songs by men which involve a woman doing them wrong, the ladies of Country seem pretty devoted in their fellas.

The Way You Love Me by Faith Hill

I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton

What do you think Polerius? Has your faith in woman’s ability to love been restored?

It was mutual!

You need to listen to more non-pop music, OP.

Sally Shapiro “He Keeps Me Alive”
A Fine Frenzy “Almost Lover”
Alexz Johnson “Your Eyes”
Alicia Keys “Fallin’”
Amy Millan “Skinny Boy”
Anne McCue “I Want You Back”
Astaire “L-L-Love”
Brenda Xu “Losing The Moment”
Class Actress “Keep You”
Elastica “Love Like Ours”
Fight Like Apes “Time Me Up With Jackets”
Forget Cassettes “Bruce Wayne”
Frente! “What’s Come Over Me”
Greta Gaines “Whiskey Thoughts”
Haley Bonar “Give It Up”
Imogen Heap “I Am In Love With You”
IO Echo “Addicted”
Julianna Hatfield “Everybody Loves Me But You”
Kate Nash “Nicest Thing”
Lin McEwan “You Didn’t Love Me Back”
Liz Phair “Rock Me”
Lizz Wright “My Heart”
Los Abandoned “Stalk U”
Lucinda Williams “Can’t Let Go”

…to be continued (maybe)

For those who continue to post new songs: As I mentioned in post #21, “the main thesis in the OP is incorrect”, that is, you guys have made your point and I agree that women do write songs about guys they love.

The funny thing is that I actually know a lot of the songs that have been brought up, but could not think of them when writing the OP.

Looking back, I think the reason is that I phrased the OP overly-broadly. I wrote it about songs that express love for people of the opposite sex. But what I really was thinking, and you can see that from the list of songs I wrote in the OP, is songs that express love for a person of the opposite sex and also include that person’s name.

That is, there are love songs about Amanda, Mandy, Alice, Annie, Caroline, etc, but what I don’t know are any love songs with “John” in the title, or Bob, or Mike, or Jason, or other male names.

All the great songs you guys listed are indeed love songs from a woman and about a man, but I don’t see any with guys’ names in them.

I know I did not specify this in the OP, so I don’t want to seem to be moving the goal-posts. But I think that’s the sort of thing I was thinking about when I said I couldn’t think of analogous songs from women about men they love.

Based on the history of this thread and your extensive musical knowledge, I expect someone to quickly prove me wrong again, that is, that there are indeed love songs by women about the men they love/have a crush on, with the man’s name in the title.

Umm…Lola?
