I like this board because it doesn’t dengenerate into mindless rambling like many boards, in debates people don’t just insult each other, they actually go make well reasoned debates, get good cites, and anyone with bad data is called on very quickly. That and the large variety of topics you find on this board as well. ---

Well, I was like many others–Threadspotting quickly sucked me into the Straight Dope vortex and I’ve been trying to escape ever since. I can only go a day or two without a fix and then my brain slips into “MUST…READ…STRAIGHT…DOPE” mode and I am helpless to stop it. There needs to be some sort of 12-step program for Straight Dope addicts, I think. ---

I was at another board and the political arguements were getting to me, I can’t handle it when people yell and they were yelling alot. The Non-political stuff was fun and interesting but I needed more. SD was referenced enough I finally had to come see what the big deal was, now I know. And I think several rational folk from the other board are here too. And Ya’ll don’t yell. ---

Heh heh heh…it’s called the “Straight Dope Message Board”. Unsuspecting newbies erroneously muse, “Oh, that’s because it is the message board of the **Straight Dope** , the _ **Cecil Adams** _ brilliance I’ve seen hither and yon…” No. Quite aside from our reverence and devotion to **The Cecil** , and without disrespect for that, the truth is that the name is derived from the fact that the Board is as addictive as the most pernicious dope, and it is uncut and undiluted, therefore “straight”. And you may consider yourself hooked, btw. ---
