There is only one reason I see to cheer for a Trump victory: the head-exploding liberal reaction.

Unfortunately, this is akin to laughing at the water lapping at the feet of my opponent’s lifeboat bilge, and only then realizing that we share the same boat.

Decent points in the OP. But, those points don’t necessarily add up to a “best” President.

I’ve almost decided to vote for Trump in the upcoming primary just because: I JUST WANT TO SEE IT! At this point I’m just curious what the hell a Trump presidency would look like. We’ve pretty much seen the likes of Rubio and Cruz and Kasich and Clinton in the White House. . . you might could say the same for Sanders, “I just want to see it.”

Good thing you acknowledge you are not well aware, but in reality Trump started going to Arpaio’s hateful rallies in Arizona, **even after both Republican senators from Arizona advised all candidates not to do so**.

And to do that Trump had to willfully(?) ignore that Arpaio had already been found by the courts that his department had used racial profiling. At the time Trump came to kowtow Arpaio, he was back in court for trying to go around the deal made before to address that racial profiling issue. Trump must also love how Arpaio even investigated the relatives of the judge that is preceding in his current case in a clear attempt to intimidate the judge.

It is clear that prejudiced authoritarians love each other.

Not much, but one thing we do know is that he’s the kind of guy who would present himself as a hateful destroyer as his public character. Is someone who would choose that persona really someone we want as President?

What’s more scary than that, and more scary than the OPs theory that the real Donald would govern differently than the candidate Trump is that there is seemingly a large segment of Republican voters who WANT the persona. It’s hard for me to even fathom. I mean, I can see why the lefties are going for Sanders on the Democratic side, but Trump?? I just don’t get it. 😕

> The more I ponder who to vote for in the primary, the more I am convinced to vote for Trump. In the general, I would definitely vote for him over the Queen of the Harpies Clinton. But wait? Isn’t he going to destroy America? I don’t think so - in fact he may go down as the best Presidents ever and here’s why. Oh and for the record I am a Republican but nowhere even close to the TeaBagger wing.
>
> 1. Trump is a pragmatist. When you look at his business dealings it is all about the most practical way to solve problems. Hey if he has to file bankruptcy then fine; why not take advantage of the laws if they favor you.
>
> 2. “Trump” is a character; the real Donald will get things done. I’ve heard a few reports that Donald Trump is not at all like the persona he portrays. Yes, in public President Trump will be all bluster and self-aggrandizing but in the day-to-day politicking he will be the deal-maker. A Dem Senate would not be pulling the same stuff with Donald like the Pubs do with Obama. Think more of an LBJ presidency.
>
> 3. Trump is a moderate. If you look at his history, he is probably more of a Democrat than Republican. Wait then why is he spouting off about deporting all Browns and banning Muslims from entering the country? Look at point #1. Trump understands you have to appeal to the TeaBag base to win the primary. I mean my God, his two competitors are Cruz and Rubio. The outsider is Kasich- That more TeaBag than in the Lipton’s factory. Does anyone thin a true moderate Pub like Sandoval (Gov - NV) or Collins (Sen - ME) would have a chance. I predict that upon winning the nomination he will radically veer back to the middle.
>
> 4. Not worried about public image. I don’t think Trump really care what people think of him personally. He doesn’t sit at home crying because no one thinks he’s a nice guy. That could play well when he has to make deals. I can see him being like President Richard Belzer in _Groove Tube_.

I suppose the one point in here I can sort of buy (besides the assertion that he’ll run to the center once elected…that’s pretty much what I expect most of them to do, with the exception of Bernie and perhaps Cruz) is that Trump, unlike any of the other potential Republican presidential candidates, probably would be more willing to work through consensus than stick to hard core party politics. He’d most likely be willing and possibly even able to work WITH the Democrats in congress to actually get stuff done. The problem is that where we are today, doing that would basically alienate his own party…and, the thing is, like Bernie I think he would start as basically an outsider with little political capital or his own party backing him. It’s pretty obvious that the Republican establishment is horrified by the idea of Trump in the drivers seat, and I think that will translate to pretty anemic backing from his own party, let alone from the Dems. He will be Carter but without any of Carters few pluses…so I think your theory he’d be the best president ever is fatally flawed right there.

I disagree most with point (4). I think Trump is acutely concerned with his public image and of what people think about him, evident in his tendency to be thin-skinned and vindictive, e.g. in his tweets, where he often comes across like a dimwitted class bully struggling to respond in kind to an insult that went over his head. As such, he appeals in large part to others who are also thin-skinned and vindictive, or who wish they had the nerve and the opportunity to be.

I don’t consider being thin-skinned and vindictive a virtue, and I certainly don’t want someone with those traits to have the power of the Presidency.

Republicans want a straight talker like Trump to, ‘Get Things Done!’?

Nah, it is more likely that the current Republican senators will be sacked by the many tea partiers over here just for daring to sound reasonable.

Still, one has to point out that Bill Clinton did win Arizona, it is possible that Hillary can pull it too.

_A Democrat_ may be capable of this behavior. \* Democrats\* collectively have values, social institutions, and voter bases incompatible with strict obstructionism. They may make other stupid decisions, but the Dems grinding government to a halt out of spite is not something that will ever happen.

Let me clarify #4. Trump has a carefully honed public image and it doesn’t bother him that people think he is a bully vindictive asshole that everyone should kowtow to\*. In fact he WANTS the public to think that’s him.

Tea Party conservatives keep saying they are tired of politicians that promise them they will successfully address their issues, then never do it. So why do they keep electing liars? Because they just won’t vote for someone who tells the truth. They are begging to be lied to, then astonished when they get screwed again.
