Do you respect his judgment in the way he treated his son, as outlined in this thread?
As a person, it’s pretty clear that John Lennon was selfish and abusive to pretty much everyone in his life, especially the women.
There’s a song from the musical Hair directed at those who care about “the bleeding crowd,” about evil, and social injustice, but don’t really give a damn about the people they pass on the street every day, and aren’t always very nice to their supposed friends. Kinda sums up the way John and Yoko seem to have conducted themselves.
Why should anyone inherit any, let alone all money from their parents if they die? Julian or any other kid from rich parents never worked for that money.
I’m actually appalled that anyone dares calling 100k ‘so minuscule as to be irrelevant’. Tell that to a single mother of three working six days a week just to keep them fed and clothed!
So John and Yoko were selfish bastards. Big deal, if you are famous and/or rich, you’ll get away with anything - what else is new?!
The worst I’ve ever seen about McCartney was that he believed he was the better musician than either Starr or Harrison, and treated them accordingly. However, that kind of creative difference and self-opinion seems quite different to me than poor treatment of your son and ex-wife.
There’s something to be said for being pleasantly insincere.
McCartney seemed to have the most musical range of all the Beatles. He’s performed playing bass, acoustic, and electric guitars, keyboard/piano, and drums. George and John had some flexibility too but not that much. Whoever is a “better” musician is pretty subjective though.
Who should get it then?
The default answer when there are no heir is, of course, the Crown/state/government, but I wouldn’t think that would be appealing to an anarchist-liberalist.
Society should get it.
That sounds so much better than ‘The State’ or ‘The Government’. These words are somehow associated with bureaucracy, inefficiency or outright corruption…
And please don’t lecture me on the practicalities. I know that any legislation to that purpose will in the end mean that Joe the Plumber can’t leave a little hard earned money to his kids, while the rock stars and bankers will always find a way (usually via the Bahama or Cayman islands)
The point I’m making is that I just don’t see why there is almost universal consensus that it’s somehow natural or logical that everything you own goes to your children, especially when we’re talking millions
The point of the OP, however, is that Lennon DID will huge sums to his children; the hitch was that Yoko’s kid got most of it and Cynthia’s kid got the scraps.
Indeed. And in the ensuing discussion it was established that a) John was a selfish dick and b) Julian in the end got the 20 million he apparently ‘deserved’ somehow - for all his hard work at … well, being John Lennon’s kid …
I was going to bite on this but I’ve been beaten to it. That’s a LOT of money.
Nah – Jude is its own name. The song started out as “Hey Jules”, a diminutive of Julian. And McCartney wrote it.
Some of my favorite musicians are complete jerks. I’m fine with that. I’m not going to listen to the music of a really nice person with no talent.
And Paul was the nice one.
being named “Julian.”
And everybody hates Yoko. Which I have no problem with. (In the classic documentary The Ruttles, she is shown invariably in a black Nazi uniform. I always refer to her simply as the AntiChrist.)
No, 100,000 (pounds or dollars) is crumbs in an estate Lennon’s size. Leaving that much to Julian is just rubbing salt into the wound created through almost two decades of neglect. John was a doofus. You can see it in how he treated his ex-wife, his bandmates, Julian and how much of a pussywhipped schmuck he was with Yoko. Pretty much a complete tool, other than as a songwriter and musician for about a decade. After the Beatles, he wasn’t even much of a musician or songwriter.
+1
Seems ironic. Way more money was probably made off of Hey Jude than “Jude” got in the will.
Forvermore, Hey Jude will now probably make me think of “whata dick!” rather than “sad but inspirational song” from now on.
