Why, Why, Miss American Pie?

“American Pie” is the song I hate the most, I don’t care who sings it. That song blows.

The movie, however, contrary to Diane’s opinion, is probably the most hilarious movie I’ve seen in a long time. The guy who plays Finch looks and acts EXACTLY like my brother. How can you not laugh at Jim’s well meaning father, the band camp girl and the glee club jock? Outstanding humor.

Speaking of covers, I heard what I think was a cover of “Surrender” bu Cheap Trick. Does anyone know the original artist?

Life is a tragedy for those who feel and a comedy for those who think.

Well, Rainbow had a song named Surrender.

As for Madonna: I downloaded the MP3 and listened to it a few times. And although this mights surprise you, I don’t think it’s a bad cover. Bear in mind the following:

1) The original is 10 times better.
2) The song has a ver Madonna-esque sound to it.
3) It is genuinely different from the original in terms of instruments used.
4) It is adapted to this time.

It is not a brilliant song, I can live a few days without it, but I fail to see why y’all are so worked up about it.

Why are you guys shocked? I thought She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named had a sort of reputation for profaning the sacred.

I haven’t heard the song yet-- don’t want to. I should be able to avoid hearing it, though. So far, I have managed to avoid the Backstreet Boys entirely, and have only heard Brittney Spears once.

What I can’t get over is that cheesy faux-Brittish accent.

I saw the video last night. It’s worse than the song itself.

Remember, I’m pulling for you; we’re all in this together.

I finally hear/saw the video and I have to say it’s the most bland and listless Madonna song I’ve heard. Odd. I also never associated her with “plumber butt” before now.

It looks like Don McLean actually likes Madonna’s cover of American Pie. He calls it “sensual and mystical,” in a filler blurb in today’s paper. He added “I have received many gifts from God, but this is the first time I have ever received a gift from a goddess.”

Most offensive cover since Eric Clapton did “I Shot the Sheriff”. (I know Clapton is considered a god by some on this board, but his white-boy take on a reggae classic was lame with a capital L.)

The phrase “songwriting royalties” leaps to mind. If you think about it, Don has a definite interest in seeing the cover sell well.

Grace:

“They Don’t Know”, written and originally recorded by Kirsty MacColl, who if there were any justice in the world would be a far bigger star than Madonna and Cher put together. MacColl produced Ullman’s You Broke My Heart in 17 Places LP, on which “They Don’t Know” appeared, wrote the title track and a couple of others as well, and sang backup, and provided the high “Baby” that joins the bridge to the final chorus in “They Don’t Know” (may have been lifted directly from MacColl’s previously recorded version – I can’t hear any difference).

Definately! Plus, to me, this is not the strongest song on the “American Pie” album - Vincent is my favorite, but the last song about the young Marine in Vietnam kicks a**. It’s a beautiful piece of songwriting and the way it seques into the next is incredible. If you haven’t heard it, you do NOT know what you are missing. Pick it up.

I…just…heard it. You all excuse me while I go and give myself a Van Gogh. Or two.
