Why would a restaurant only take American Express?

I found out the hard way when I was young and did get a Texaco credit card that you have to pay the balance in full every month, just like an Amex card. Besides a couple tanks of gas, I also bought my mother some new tires for her car thinking I’ll pay them off over a 6 month period. When the first bill arrived, I could not find a minimum amount due on the bill, the bill stated I owed something like $344. I sent $50 figuring that should be enough. Nope, a few weeks later I received a dunning notice, pay the full balance or my account would go to collections. I decided to read the credit card agreement and sure enough, it stated the full balance was due each month. I paid the credit card off the next month and they promptly cancelled it on me. I haven’t had a gas company card since.

Many years ago Marathon’s credit card was not a revolving credit card but rather one that you had to pay the balance in full every month. However, it was very clear in the credit card agreement and on the bill that the balance was due in full. They went to a revolving credit card about 10 years ago. I doubt if any retailers continue to offer those pay-the-balance-in-full cards anymore because their cost of collections has to be enormous.
